Can anyone nominate a mic pre [single or dual channel] that could be considered such.

i.e. the all-out bargain--bang for the buck--all-agreed--best under $1000--winner like the RNC [which is really under $200]. Or is the RNC an anomaly.

Seems every BBS can agree [to an overwhelming majority] on Mackie as a mixer and RNC as a compressor, but the mic pre is cause for wide spectrum of opinion and debate.

nominees

Delta DMP3
Joe Meek MQ3
Art Tube MP

and btw, Mackie doesnt win hands down....alot will rather Soundcraft or Allen & Heath........

I got it from on high,FMR audio, makers of the RNC, is definatly coming out soon with the RNMP,I would wait for it,I am.
They are even preping one of their web sites for it.

The RNC isn't an anomily, more like a golden goose.

If you can't wait,the Grace 101 is it's closest contender,more money though.

BTW-Mercenary has the RNC for $175

Aren't all components which do not feature balanced ins/outs somewhat less than pro-level gear?

Yeah really the RNMP (latest reports say 60 days, until it hits the market) is the "RNC" of mic pre...becuase they are made by the same company. heh. And, I am sure it will be good...going to have a colored sound though...which, isn't really my bag. That also makes it unlike the RNC in some ways - in that the RNC is really transparent and that's what people like about it.

So...we don't know what the RNMP will be like really...until we've heard it. from the speculation I am hearing though - I am saying the Grace 101 is more like the RNC.

Not that I am knocking the RNMP...I am sure it will be great and I will want one.

Also gotta wait for the Studio Projects what is it...V1T, or something like that. Could be very sweet as well around 300 bucks - I am not sure but I think 60 days is a decent estimate on that as well.

Bottom line - mic pres are really being stepped up lately, in the mid-pro price range...I am impressed.

ametth,
Can you elaborate?
My understanding of recording is rather limited. I rely on this forum for information and education.
I read something in the past which leads me to believe that the accumulation of noise from numerous channels of audio recorded through unbalanced cable is not to be desired. True, or no?
On another issue, I need to replace my soundcard and would like a recommendation.
I will be replacing a SB PCI 64D. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the type of card I've heard described as an "audio/synth" card?
I would like to replace it with the same type of card by a different manufacturer.
I sent Creative Labs an email expressing dissatisfaction over the fact that the latest update available for the 64D was issued in July of '99.
The response I got, though professional, was curt and tactless. They don't need my business, evidently, so I plan to accomodate them. If there are no newer cards of the same ilk, then I guess it's time to move up to the next level.
Can you recommend something?

Well, yes and no. "Numerous channels?" Probably not a good idea. If your setup is anything like mine, then you probably have a sea of chords all over the place like spaghetti. If this is the case, then you'd better have as many balanced connnections as humanly possible.

One or two unbalanced connections are highly unlikely to give you any problems. You just have to make sure that your connections are very short. I have two unbalanced connections, but the chords are about 3 feet long, and they're well-insulated. The only real source of noise I have anywhere is from my sound card, and that's pretty miniscule.

As far as your other question is concerned, we do have another forum for that sort of thing if you go to the home page and scroll down a little further.

the dmp3 seems to have all of what most seem to want but i guess no one is going to know which is best untill someone buys and tests them all if anything im sure they will all have different flavourings so that might be a better way to view it
