"APC's record sound SUCKS ASS, thin and lifeless comes to mind."

seriously, where the hell do you hear that?

I cant point it out if you cant hear it....I cant guarantee you will ever hear the thinness/lifelessness of this record (sounds like it was a prostools record), but if you keep recording and listening to good recordings, you too will hear it. YYMV, and good luck.

my god...it didnt take him 14 years. he simply wrote little bits and pieces here and there and in 1998 he spent a year recording it and putting it all together.

and what was that about my r&b drum machine songs?? what? I have only posted one song on that forum and that was just to show my first attempt at writing/recording/everything. i now have a live drummer and only use a drum machine if i want to do cheesy things just to play around, like....this:

Its called "My TCBY cup just fell"

its my answer to low-phi punk crap...

Your link does not work.

I'm almost positive Mer De Noms was recorded with Pro Tools. I agree that the recording leaves quite a bit to be desired. I liked the album quite a bit when it came out, and there are some good songs on it, but now it just seems like it was something to tide me over until Lateralus came out.

the only people who dont like it are those who listened to it while waiting for lateralus. they wanted tool and when they didnt get it they became upset.

The only thin part of the record might lie in the rhythm guitar. They sound rather scooped in the mids, but i like it. Im getting kind of tired of the thick rhythm guitar thats drowning in reverb sound.

but listen to a song like renholder. thats incredibly full of life and dense with organic"ness". So is 3 Libras. "Sleeping Beauty" might be the only one that i think sounds a little too clinical.

You trying to say my expectations were too high? ;)

I don't mind that it's not Tool, I just like good music - APC had a great vocalist and a great drummer, it's just not as conceptually interesting. I actually dig that Massive Attack All Main Courses remix of 3 Libras more than the original.

I posted a much longer response and something goofed. This thread is not important enough to try to remember all I said so I leave you with this, gentlemen......................

i like APC, but common, you can hear that billy recorded it himself... and yes it's pro-tools... and there are loads of shit wrong with the album... but now that i think of it... you just admitted lo-fi is the way to go!!!

the cd isn't perfect but you don't hear it cuz yu like the songs sooo much... turns out WC is a lo-fi lover after all...

and saying tool isn't cool, is , well, not cool :p (to whom ever said that...)

Guhlenn

ps i don't care for the lo-fi vs hi-fi battle...

Okay, I finally listened to a couple White Stripes songs, and did not like them. I'm just talking about the SONGS - didn't like them.

As for the recordings, the person who said they were trying to make lo-fi with hi-fi was right. I don't get it. Why didn't they just get a couple 4 track machines and do it at home? As it is, it just sounds empty and phony.

Still haven't listened to Rye Coalition yet...

right. im not even attacking the recording METHOD they employed. the main reason i dont like it is because the songs are boring. very very boring.

crap....who turned the HTML off?

OK.....
So sue me....

In todays age...with all of the resources so readilly available...
Why would someone deliberately make something new sound so bad??

I guess it is considered Nouveau.....cutting edge...

BULLSHIT I say!!!!

So much for engineering.....

oh yeah

hey im new here and just stumbled across this thread searching for lofi stuff...
wow i read the whole thing and let me say i really enjoyed it. it was great hearing you guys bash it out over something so debated, kinda retrospect excpecially since the new apc album was kinda lofi (haha)

anyway just incase you guys didnt know the whitestripes albumn was recorded in like 2 weeks in a basement on a 8track,...

and the debate is still going on. even with a four year old thread.

hahahahahahaha.

rod

i wonder how many of these guys that still frequent the forum look back and have changed their minds....lol

Long debate, didnt care to read all the posts. Just want to add: i don´t see anything lo-fi about the strokes. the whole soundscape is SO produced, lo-fi has nothing to do witht the flavour of the sound, only the way it has been made.

go listen to the love of everything and really understand lo-fi. the most simple, off key, and full of humilty music ive ever heard. theres even outdoors noises in the background.

Albini did Pavement's last record
No...... Sorry I'm way late responding here but Nigel Godrich did Pavement's last album.

a great hi fi recording isnt going to make a shit song good. and a great song thats recorded 'lo fi' could still be good but might not or might do it justice. Its also dependant on the style of music. Epic classcal music like the lord of the rings sound track needs to be recorded hi fi otherwise it would sound crap. however a crust punk band could record lo fi and get away with it. Also some lo fi recordings have more energy to it than a fully produced compressed to death recording.
