i'm not one of those people :), i just get a kick out of stirring the shit bucket.....

hasn't kid rock suffered enough? poor guy has to look at himself in the mirror everymorning and realize that that shit smudge is just his own reflection

'lowfi' punk sucks?? hmmmmm......
punk rock really IS low-fi....that's what it's all about...the focus is on the MUSIC, the ATTITUDE - not the recording...
go listen to Nirvana's first record 'Bleach'...does that record suck?? millions of people who bought that record after Nirvana hit it big would disagree with ya if you say it does...but, really, that record is 'low fi'...it's not some over-produced, over-processed, piece of crap - it's about great songs...not pristine over-compressed production

I really think that you've got to open your mind a bit, get out there and listen to something other than the MTV 'lowfi' crap that's pumped to the masses....check out recordings by bands like June of '44, Shellac, the Mercury Program, Shipping News, Don Caballero, Trans AM, Isotope 217, Tortoise, etc., etc., etc., etc.....great musicians writing great music - and the recordings aren't $hit either....they're just not over-compressed, over-produced, radio-friendly crap that MTV will pick up and play

also - Josh Freese (who, as I'm sure you know, plays drums for your favorite band) would probably disagree with ya on the punk issue (but's that's another topic altogether)

"Rap isn't music." "Punk rock sucks."

I like tool Web Cyan, but you make them harder to like. Sometimes I just want to pee down your throat.

By the way, if you can just whip something up that rivals anything on the Stooges funhouse you can pee down my throat.

Or if you could write a single song that touches anything on the Stooges "Raw Power." Seriously, if any of these bands were anywhere near as furious and exciting as the Stooge4s, I;d have all their albums.

Actually, I do have all of Tool's albums, and the Perfect Circle album. But man, you're right, rabid fandom like this makes the hole thing sour.

The terms "hi-fi" and "low-fi" really only make much sense when you're talking about monitoring and/or reproduction. Production is all about how you want it to sound.

Is a distorted guitar "lo-fi"???? Yes, if you look at from the perspective of the signal that's actually coming out of the guitar. But who would argue these days that all recordings of distorted guitars are "lo-fi"?????

"go listen to Nirvana's first record 'Bleach'...does that record suck??"

i have it. it does suck. imo.

the quote by jett is funny as hell though... :)

There you go... replying all civil-like and taking all the wind out of my sails.

I think that I'll go listen to some old Run DMC, which being both rap and punk (depending on who you talk to) should really raise your hackles.

Yo Pratt...

I just saw Shipping News play last night in Louisville. The band rocked but there was something about the sound in that old auditorium (Spectrum Center). It was all roomy and lo-fi and I just had to get out of there. So, I headed over to webcyan's house and we rocked out to APC all night long...it was great:D

Seriously, good music will remain good music whether it is recorded in hi-fi or lo-fi. We all know this...

Oh yeah...Dr., check out the new Rye Coalition album...On Top. It rocks...on top.

low fi might be able to be good, but it can never attain greatness. :D

"I think that I'll go listen to some old Run DMC, which being both rap and punk (depending on who you talk to) should really raise your hackles. "

god no... rap/punk, could there be a worse combination?

I didnt read most of the posts above before replying because I'm lazy, and most people have nothing interesting to say (including me).

I'll just type my random thoughts here: Yay for Surfer Rosa. APC's record sound SUCKS ASS, thin and lifeless comes to mind. Strokes=Lo-Fi? HAH They spent alot of money on that overproduced 'lo-fi' album. mmm, Ice Cream. Yeap.

I'm still waiting for webcyan to post his brilliant masterpiece that he recorded last week....you know, the one that will blow away any other piece of 'lofi punk' that was ever recorded....

how about it, webcyan...
;)

I dunno... after reading a lot of the posts in this most amusing thread, it appears to me (and I could be completely wrong) that the definition of punk is, in my most humble opinion, getting rather horribly distorted.

Nirvana, Tool... etc. is really not punk. Hell, I wouldn't even call Bad Religion punk (anymore). Punk, real punk, is the stuff you've never heard of, the stuff you can only find in the pages of Maximum Rocknroll (at least when Tim Yo was still alive)... or even smaller zines and those shitty little record stores in the bad neighborhoods.

Punk is the music you never hear or see unless you look really really hard.

Punk, to me is the old stuff on Victory records (Victory these days puts out some great stuff... but it aint punk) or Revelation, or Conversion records (for more modern hardcore/punk).

To me, the classic punk band was the Misfits, to me there isn't a better sounding punk record than the original Static Age sessions (which became Legacy of Brutality). Then there are bands like Naked Raygun (that invented the whole Chicago quarterstick sound) from the mid-80's that progressed punk to more art than noise... and in the early 90's you had the brilliance of Jawbreaker, Samiam and Crimpshrine that put east bay on the map (even though Jawbreaker was from NYC at that time). Listen to "Busy" by Jawbreaker (or anything off the Unfun LP)... total Lo-fi... completely punk and absolulte brilliance.

Ah, but to quote The Dude: "yeah well, that's just like your opinion man."

When I was a little kid I loved Kool-Aide. In fact, I really figured I'd be drinking the stuff forever! How can you go wrong with pure sugar!!??

You'll get over it cyan, I promise :)

Why are you guys taking WC so seriously? Isnt he the same guy who said his cheap strat sounds EXACTLY like a Les Paul and that he can make his cheap strat sound EXACTLY like a bass?

In regards to older music being better, well. Ever heard the expression "Test of Time"? There's a reason people still listen to 50yr old music.

You can get an attitude about APC in another 15yrs. Until then you should probably mellow out so you dont look like an idiot when you start singing the praises of the next great thing that comes over the airwaves.

"APC's record sound SUCKS ASS, thin and lifeless comes to mind."

seriously, where the hell do you hear that?

its just that this whole low-fi retro punk thing is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo pretentious. Did you ever see the live show the strokes broadcast?
The lead singer was stumbling around trying to act drunk/cool and putting out some "im the guy your parents warned you about" look to drive the girls crazy.
They tried so hard to act like/look like the rolling stones.

we all have our opinions. i think apc, tool, smashing pumpkins, soundgarden, alice in chains, deftones, nin are the best bands ever....and you all like the strokes and white stripes. ok. fine.

i dont really see how you can tell me to stop praising APC until they've been around for 15 years when the strokes and white stripes, etc came out like yesterday and you all think its the coolest thing in the world. Billy howerdel began writing for APC's album in 1988...some songs are 14 years old.

I love Tex and Sack today:D

The Kool aid thing is dead on too!! A better analogy there could not be. If I'm not mistaken....I also think that WC is the guy who love APC, hates rap and "lo-fi" yet posts R&B/drum machine stuff to the mixing clinic. I'd like to point out that I have no issue with the music he posts but it's a wierd combo....that particular strong stance with that music. I wouldn't care so much but in this thread he has said that someone didnt deserve to be called a musician AND that LoFI could never acheive greatness.....implying he was some expert on either subject. I guess to me a closed minded asshole doesnt have thre right to be called a musician. A musician is an artist.

Imagine telling Picasso his painting were "lofi." Sorry Pablo...but not only do you not deserve to call yourself an artist....but you will never acheive greatness, pal. Sorry. You're a flash in the pan. So and so down the street can paint birds right down to lifelike detail.

THIS IS A MUSICIAN?!?!?! Jeez...hope it never take me 14 years to write a record:eek:

heylow sucks!

my god...it didnt take him 14 years. he simply wrote little bits and pieces here and there and in 1998 he spent a year recording it and putting it all together.

and what was that about my r&b drum machine songs?? what? I have only posted one song on that forum and that was just to show my first attempt at writing/recording/everything. i now have a live drummer and only use a drum machine if i want to do cheesy things just to play around, like....this:

Its called "My TCBY cup just fell"

its my answer to low-phi punk crap...
