The New SECRET Blue Microphone!!!!!

I heard that they used a couple of Neuman 184's in an XY, coupled with an earthworks QTC-1 room mic, direct in to their Fostex MR-8.

Any suggestions to going this route?? Is this route a little too pricy??

Also, what exactly does the setup XY mean?? And if the two stereo small Omni Condenser mics are placed 6-8 feet from the piano, would the room mic be placed even further back?? Or where else would the room mic be placed?? Anyone got any ideas??

Don't forget,
When you record, you'll find that your recording of the piano is not going to have a lot of "bottom , bass" end. When you finally mix, turn the hig end down for the piano track, you'll get the coldplay sound your looking for. I really like that band. :)
Good Luck,

But don't forget: use tons, and tons of compression.

well, even though i'm new and don't have a lot of pull around here, i love using two sm57s on piano. one in the upper register, one in the lower and jammed as close to the sound board as possible. then you might try, if you have some extra tracks, a large diaphragm condensor a little ways off of the board. but that's just my opinion....and i'm new

Coldplay is a cool band, nice recordings, and obvious high end budget...I have a blue microphone its no secret though...I mic piano with 3 dynamics over sound hole, lid, top and a LDC on the back, bottom or behind harp, a room mic adds ambience..also tried a couple SDC, SP's never had enough internal comp on the recording using the omni's, but good for ambience. I use my blue mic for guitar.

I suggest that MM91 should have used the "Future Search" function on this BBS - there have been several relevent threads since he posted this.

WHAT?

(seriously WHAT?)

If you don't have enough bass in your piano recording, MOVE THE MIC!

And Harvey has some good suggestions there, but by no means is that definitive!

Use your ears. Have someone play the piano while you walk around, stick your head in, under, and around the piano, and where it sounds best, put a mic there!

Seriously experiment. This is art we're making. There are no wrong answers, and the only right answer is what sounds good.
