we don't need rest!!
anyone had a chance to see/hear/use the new version of the AKG 451's? (called 451b now). It is a fixed capsule, cardiod, unlike the originals...and the price was around $450 list...so the street price would be...?? I've always thought the AKGs were a damn fine mic, but I have never heard these new-breed cheepie ones now...like the MXL 603 or even the ECM8000. Maybe I should skip my next meal at McDonalds and get a pair instead. Anywazzz....the 451's, anyone?

I have a C 451B coming in for evaluation/review this upcoming week. Will let you know the results as soon as possible. :)

Yeah - I'm interested to hear if they're as good as the original!

Let us know!

Hi Bruce & Don,

You guys will be the first to know [besides myself when I test it]! FWIW we have a few original C 451s to compare the new C 451B to, so history very well may repeat itself? I certainly hope so. One question for anyone out there who's reading this--what is the main sonic/timbral differences are between the C 451 and the C 460 B pencil condensers?

That's a darn good question.... I should have tested that last time I did a remote session... I had the 451s as overheads and the 460 on hi-hat... those 451s were gorgeous on cymbals -- lush and smooth... the hi-hat was clear and precise without a hint of graininess...

DAMN! I wish I had swapped them around to see!!!

Oh well... next time!

well shit...maybe I should have started this post if I wanted to ALSO find out....

"oh well...next time!" :D :D :D

oh yeah...I guess I can read too!!!:p

...and I suppose you'll do the A/B testing with the cardiod capsules too, on the C451's? ....but then they can't sound the same, unless you smack the new ones with some drum sticks a couple times:)

Hi Bruce,

I currently have an AKG C 391 B pencil which also has some interchangable capsules [like the original C 451 & C 460 B] and I have to say it really is the one for My little Martin 000 acoustic. Better than the A-T 4041. So for my purpose the C 451 B would only be used for overheads and acoustic guitars. I noticed that the C 460 B has a few capsules available [omni, hypercardioid] but no figure eight capsule! This is the primary reason I picked up the C 391 B instead of the 460 as I wanted to get a pair of matched pencils that could be used for Blumlein, M/S and X/Y techniques. I just grab the appropriate capsules and off to the races! :) I don't know what it is about the C 391 B but it has this nice clear and sort of creamy sound. It also kills for mic'ing 212/412cabinets in conjunction with a dynamic ball style mic.

Hi mixmkr,

Oops, my apologies my friend-- You will be the FIRST to know :^). You were indeed the one who started this 451 B thread/ question. You can bet that we'll be using the original cardioid capsules when we check 'em out too! I'll whack them real good with a pair of 2B drumsticks [just for you, man] before we commence our initial testing, okay?

:D
