Traitorous Usurper
Just got done reading this after a weekend of Vegas airport layovers, and I've gotta say that possession of this book should almost be a requirement for joining this website. If you're looking to get started, this book will explain a lot of the most basic concepts that you might be a little scared to ask about here. The hook-up diagrams at the end of each chapter are great. You've probably seen mention of the book several times on this bbs with the caveat "some of the information is a little dated" (Sel-Sync?? Who the hell cares??), but all the stuff about compression, eq, mixers, blah blah blah is written up in way that anybody can figure out. Plus there are some pretty funny pictures of mullets.
I think the best part of the slight oldness of this book is seeing the price list of gear. It's pretty amazing what we've got access to nowadays. Who would have thought you can buy a new digital 8 track recorder now for less than 300 bucks? This thing talks about $1400 4-track cassette portastudios...
Seriously, go pick it up. Read. Then start asking questions.
