Well, with the restrictions you've given me, it's impossible to list the ideal microphone locker.

A good multipattern LDC. A pair of good SDCs. A few good dynamic mics (RE-20, SM-7, MD-421, SM-57). Beyond this it's horses for courses.

This would be the Ideal Affordable Vocal/Guitar Locker.:D

A multipattern LDC...a vocal LCD...Matched pair SDC or LDC...a Large Capsule Dynamic if you only want one mic.

Multipattern mics I have seen arround the price.
Shure KSM44...C414...AT4050

Vocal LDC I like for that price
AT4047...KSM32

Matched pairs I really like.
AT3035...KSM32.

LCD I like...and you dont have to skimp here...the best out there seem to be arround this price point.
Shure SM7...Senn MD421...and Im liking the Beyer M88 on what Ive heard it on so far.

Cool.
What do you recommend to change for my mic setup?

-Audio Technica AT4050
-SM7B
-Rode NTK

Id pick the Rode to be replaced if you want a change towards something better...everthing else seems to be pretty good.

For a Vocal go to mic I think the AT4047 compares well to the Neumann that it is made to sound like...and there is alot of difference in price.

Thanks Darrin, you are always very helpful. The thing with the NTK is that it suits very good for my brothers voice. He have a weak voice with a dark tone,I would never put a SM7 In front of his Mouth. The NTK it is brighter comapred with my other mics.Check the track (I used the TLM103 with the M-Audio tampa for that track) but now that you know his voice you could recommend a nic for him: http://www.myspace.com/skystudioshouston

Suggestions will be appreciated.

myspace is being stupid I guess. Keeps telling to upgrade my flash. But the link for that goes back to the myspace page. Hmmm. Looks like version 10 is out, I could have sworn that I upgraded to the latest in July.

Have you tried the AT4050 on your bro? You can always try a little EQ to make him sound different. Or reverb / layering / auto tune / ...........

I tend towards more of the audience perspective recording. Two mics, one recorder press record, press stop when it's over. It looks like you're lacking a good stereo pair for that type of stuff. AT4051's? NT5's? MK-012's? MXL603's? STO-2's? MC930's? As long as the $600- is per mic, most of those should fit the bill. Having a track for everything is great, but sometimes having a dumb binaural type recording is refreshing. i.e. This is what you sound like without any fancy editing. i.e. This is what the little folk hear when you perform live. (unless you're lip syncing to the CD)

IDK about ideal but this one serves me well...

Dynamic
57 (4)
i5 (2)

R92 (2)* **
R121 (1)*
Trion7000 (2) Fig-8
Fat Head (1) Fig-8

* - outside $100-$600 range.

** - found to be an excellent vocal mic.

Well, that's not the ideal mic cabinet, it's the who's who of cheap mics. OK my under-$600 all star lists includes:

Shure SM7b
Sennheiser MD421 (get a pair)
AKG C2000B (get a pair)
AT4050
Rode NTK (I disagree with Darrin on this one- it's a no-brainer)
Oktava MK319
B.L.U.E. Baby Bottle
AKG D112 (no, not just for drums)
Studio Projects C-4

On that list, most male vocalists would be recorded with SM7, C2000B, NTK, or AT4050.
Most female vocalists with SM7, MK319, NTK, C2000B, Baby Bottle, or AT4050.
Steel string acoustic with C4, NTK, AT4050, or C2000B
Nylon string acoustic w/ C4 or C2000B
electric guitar w/ MD421 and/or C2000B
D112 for really deep voices

There are lots of others I could list that would be acceptable alternatives, such as AT4033 and AT4040, but if I had the mics listed above, I probably wouldn't use them much.-Richie

Thankks Darrin,Sonixx And Richard Monroe that's exactly the Kind of answer that i am expecting.:) I was tinking to add the Babby bottle,a Pair of MXL 603s.(I am trading a DMP3 For them on the "For sale" Section) And Richard opened a Question with his Reply: AKG C2000B or Audio Technica AT3035.They Appear to be Similar but i think that i could get the 3035 for cheap.

What I would do if I had the list of say 10 mics people have listed here is sell all of them and start with one Neumann U87.

That would be my starting point.

You can do anything with that mic except stereo, and I'd rather have one great mic than a handfull of good mics. Truthfully even a U87 isn't even really a "great" great mic.

Rode NTK (I disagree with Darrin on this one- it's a no-brainer)

You dont have to be brainless to disagree with me...but it doesnt hurt...lol.:p

Rode is just outside of my trusted 5 companies... your locker does alot of the same mics as mine...what rode mics Ive had before I wasnt too wild about.

Ive stuck with AKG...AT...Shure...Sennhieser...BeyerDynamic...one big reason is mostly mics from these brands either hold value or go up....and then there is build quality and reliability.

My locker consists of:

AT 4047
AT3035 (2)
Shure KSM32
Shure KSM44
AKG C2000b
MXL603s (2)
Studio Projects C1 (Original design)
Crown PZM (2)

Shure SM57 (7)
Shure SM58 (2)
Shure SM7
Shure Beta 58
Shure 535

The u87 isnt much unlike my AT4047...it has a signature sound that adds an overtone...which is very flattering to vocals and lead instruments...and that makes it a great mic to have for those reasons...but not such a great only mic because the same overtone that makes it terrific, also keeps you from using it for alot of tracks piled on one another.
Anyhow if you ever get to hear the AT4047 you might consider it over spending 6 times the price to buy a mic...the AT4047 is a design to give you the sound of a u47.

Yo Kenny! All I want to know is where do I get my $600 Brauner Phantom-C?
Well, Darrin, I like Rode in some cases, especially since they stopped using Chinese capsules. I've had dealings directly with their customer service, and they were not good, but in fact, great. NTK is a straightforward cardioid tube mic with subtle tube color and an appropriate mid-range boost for pop vocals, R&B, or most other clean vocals. It additionally rocks on acoustic guitar for the same reasons. That boost falls short of "hyped", and is ideal for a bunch of voices. The only real quirk is- it needs to be warmed up, which can take longer than you think, depending on the temperature in the studio. -Richie

Ive been figuring on an AT4060 or a C12 when I get a tube mic...Im kinda the same way with ribbons...but I could get a Beyer M260 or something today if I wanted...good examples of tube mics are even more expensive...Ill wait until I think it could make me enough to justify the expense.

For real???? All kind of voices and guitars with just 1 MIC??

Yeah, no. That's probably a bad idea. :)

The ideal microphone locker? I'd probably go with something like:

RCA 77A
U-87 (not AI)
U-67
U-47 long body
Matched pair of Oktava MK-012 mics with the three-capsule set
Pair of Neumann M582 mics with several matched capsule pairs
Shure SM-7 (for voice, kick)

and optionally

Eight SM-57 mics (for drum kit)
AKG D112 (for rock kick)

I'd probably also throw in a couple of Naiant mics for when the Oktava and Neumann mics are too dark or have too slow a transient response. Maybe a couple of C414 mics for alternative overheads. Maybe even a pair of modern ribbons.

Oh, wait, you wanted that for $500. I thought you meant $500 grand. :D

But seriously, that's probably only about $25 grand, or thereabouts.

For $2000, I'd go with

CAD M9
AT4040
pair of CEMC6s with a wide cardioid capsule pair

For $500, that's getting pretty hard....

AT4040
Two Naiant mics
