Well, with the restrictions you've given me, it's impossible to list the ideal microphone locker.
A good multipattern LDC. A pair of good SDCs. A few good dynamic mics (RE-20, SM-7, MD-421, SM-57). Beyond this it's horses for courses.
A multipattern LDC...a vocal LCD...Matched pair SDC or LDC...a Large Capsule Dynamic if you only want one mic.
Multipattern mics I have seen arround the price.
Shure KSM44...C414...AT4050
Vocal LDC I like for that price
AT4047...KSM32
Matched pairs I really like.
AT3035...KSM32.
LCD I like...and you dont have to skimp here...the best out there seem to be arround this price point.
Shure SM7...Senn MD421...and Im liking the Beyer M88 on what Ive heard it on so far.
Id pick the Rode to be replaced if you want a change towards something better...everthing else seems to be pretty good.
For a Vocal go to mic I think the AT4047 compares well to the Neumann that it is made to sound like...and there is alot of difference in price.
What I would do if I had the list of say 10 mics people have listed here is sell all of them and start with one Neumann U87.
That would be my starting point.
You can do anything with that mic except stereo, and I'd rather have one great mic than a handfull of good mics. Truthfully even a U87 isn't even really a "great" great mic.
you're right we should all just eat rocks......
Rode NTK (I disagree with Darrin on this one- it's a no-brainer)
