Now please tell me i'm not alone in this discovery that the headling spot at most clubs is pretty much the shittiest slot you can have. Sure it looks cool to have your band name in giant letters on the marque, but because it's so late, you loose a good batch of people that may want to hang and watch more.

We used to think how kick as it would be to headline at some of the clubs that we eventually ended up headlining in San Francisco only to find that most the time you start so late that even your own friends, that love your music, are sneaking out the doors. Of course most of these clubs will have some fairly major acts ( ie... http://www.reddevillounge.com/mainpage.htm ) on the weekends, so without big radio push thursday night is pretty much what we're getting...which is fine, but being 21+ show, people have jobs and need to get their asses home before 2 am.

we've been offered many headlining slots at a bunch of these places since this realization and we find our crowd to be much more enthusiastic when we flat up refuse the headlining slot and go for the opening or middle slot (if there is one).

this is kind of an unrelated topic, but i also love that feeling when you're done playing, and you can wander around the crowd, listen to the other band and get nice and loaded now that you don't need to worry about anything. those headline acts are always kind of annoying how you need hang there for hours staying relatively sober while everyone else gets hammered...torture to a binge drinker like me!

On a three band bill, I have always considered the headlining act at a local bar here to be the second band. There is a club here in KC that would set up a line up on the weekends of three bands and be done by midnight then kick in the DJ. It made for shorts sets but it was kinda cool. The best thing was that the last band would end up playing for all of the hip hop folks that were waiting for the DJ. They always seemed more impressed by a good band than all of the musicians standing in the crowd with their arms folded.

You are 100% correct Robert. Same deal with all the clubs in Detroit, for sure - especially on a weeknight.

Oh, yeah. Headlining where I work means the top billing, and the best slot, during the week. Makes everyone happier.

for the most part, if you're not headlining your own tour, you're pretty much right
