the greastest guitarist of all

If youve read Rolling Stone lately, you prob have noticed that its an MTV magazine. They are so full of them selves, and they only print whats popular, not whats on the whole spectrum. You cant take that magazine seriously, especially since a few issues ago they called Eminem a genius. A genius! So who gives a crap about this list? Its definently not going to make me stop listening to my favorite guitarists and only listen to the guys in the top 10.

And by the way, I think Jimi Hendrix is overrated. I do think that he did some amazing things with the guitar, but he was one of the sloppiest guitarists Ive ever heard. I dont like it when people talk only about who every is influenced by. Musicians are influenced by everything around them and people get influenced by all types of music. Do you think that the Beatles invented music? No. They were influenced by people who were influenced by people who were... Personally I think that John Petrucci is the best guitarist Ive ever heard. He does the most amazing guitar work ever and he is tight to a T. Listen to some Liquid Tension Experiment and you will be blown away. All of those guys are freakin nuts. I start laughing when I hear the music cause its so creative and crazy and technical and melodic at the same time.

Peace,

Matt

In the early 90's I recieved a subscription to Rolling Stone as a x-mas gift and a year later when I didn't renew my subscription they (Swear to God) sent me a form letter that said "Fine! Waste your money on something else besides Rolling Stone!"
I couldn't believe it. Naturally I sent them back the letter with two words written on it... And they weren't "Merry Christmas".

:)

Reading a Rolling Stone mag to find the greatest guitarist of all time, is like reading a cook book to fix an engine. Rolling Stone is a fashion magazine. I never even look at it.

Well said dude.

Paul Leary of the BUTTHOLE SURFERS.

period.

he has the craziest, most unduplicatable style EVER.

i agree that rolling stone is a style mag...i wouldn't actualy buy one (unless i was on the cover (then I'd buy 5 copies for my mother)

i just saw Jimi on the cover and read what pete townsend had to say about him, while i was in walmart.

I was just making the observation that they got the #1 spot right IMO. I think Hendrix was the greatest guitar player that ever lived, and im sticking to it.

You would be hard pressed to find 2 people on the planet earth that would agree on ANY list off the 100 greatest guitar players.

personally, I would put robert johnson at #2, EVH #3, chuck berry#4, muddy waters #5

thats the top 5 that INFLUENCED the course of rock and roll and made the greaest impact IMO

if i was to compile a list of technically brilliant players NONE of my top 5 "greatest" would make the top 5 of that list.

If I was to make a list, it would be what I have to do this week. Making lists is a waste of time. Instead of making lists, go practice. If you're making lists, you've got ALOT to learn about music.

Now stop this thread. It's silly.

.......and no freakin Reverend Billy Gibbons........some list huh.

Well, I'm just glad Mclaughlin was on that list.

I CAN'T BELIEVE Gilbert wasn't on that list.

I forgot, was Friedman? How about Michael Romeo? Whoever made that list is a total ass.

You guys are all looking at the list from a guitarist's point of view. Nobody but guitarists could even name people like Petrucci or Vai or Gilbert or Friedman. The list should have been called "The 100 greatest guitarists that regular people have heard of". Even at that, they still got it wrong.
In the world of guitars you simply can't have a list without names like Charlie Christian or Andres Segovia or Joe Pass on it. They were simply too fundemental to the development of the instrument to be ignored. But then again, most people haven't heard of them either. (But then they throw out names like Danny Gatton and Scotty Moore, who are equally obscure to the non-guitarist! I bet you less than half or the Rolling Stone readership can tell you who they were.)

Maybe it should have been called "The greatest 100 guitarists that the person that made the list has heard of". Even then he still got it wrong.
OK, maybe the list should have been called "100 guitarists that I thought up in no particlar order".

That list is the biggest joke I've ever seen...

I'll bet Angus Young is glad to see Joan Jett beat him out....

And Kurt Cobain at #12 and EVH at #70?
Gimme a fucking break....

Johnny Ramone at #16?.. guess if you can play 3 chords you're a guitar genius..

I got major issues with 80% of that list...

i've been practicing for 25 years
if you don't like the thread....leave, nobody's making you participate in this disscussion.

To me the list is just another list that (after my initial outrage) I can take, leave, love, hate, whatever., BUT if ANY good came of it
I would have to say that It got names thrown out of guys I've (and maybe others here) never heard of, but who knows?

I know these names were mentioned already but, I was surprised when I didn't see Demiola, Malmsteen, Atkins, or Segovia on the list.

You guys think Buddy Holly should have been on there?
How about Bonnie Riatt in place of Joan Jett?

:)

Putting Les Paul at number 46 shows how dumb these polls are. Les began the whole multi-track revolution and electronic guitar madness.

I heard that in next months issue they're gonna use one of those magic eight balls to help decide the ten greatest religous figures.

What a joke. No Neal Schon or Alex Lifeson....and Ed Van Halen is number 70? Ugh....and get Kurt Cobain off the friggin list already!

Since everybody hates this list, why don't we make our own? We have an ample cross-section of guitarists here. I'll start a new thread right now. Get yer butt to it and vote.

The rollingstone site has about 7000 emails regarding this stupid list. You can read all the comments on their site. 99% of people disagree.

Considering the huge feedback they got, it might well be a marketing ploy to get our attention. For example, I had never before read that trashy magazine. Now after the list was published I did visit their site.

Anyway, that's all speculative. It's obvious that they do have amatuer people who have only listened to those people on the list.

I think EVH should be#1.
Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen along with EVH should hold the top 4 slots. I have been playing guitar for 21years and I know first hand how difficult it is to play like them.
