Can't even get the article
Curiosity got me on the thread but I cold not even connect to the article. Nevertheless, I get the drift. I have a home stuido, I can DIY (Actually DIM - Do It Myself) but...Despite the fact that I have gotten compliments on my sound, my recordings if you will, I do not imagine that I can get the sound and quality of top pros with state of the art gear. Now, the price of gear may have come donw with respect to affordable devices that do similar things as the top end gear, however, real, top quality, toatally pro SSL and what-have-you,
LA2A's, Pultecs, Harmonizer's, Fairchild's etc. exactly who thinks that the price of these items is now "affordable", who believes that budget gear, Behringer, Mackie, Presonus, etc. does the same thing, and who imagines that the results of the average home stuido can compete with a fully equipped, pro stuido with a top flight engineer at the helm. And, not to mention, who believes that an average home stuiod can compete with th likes of a, Bod Ludwig type masteriing studio with $80,000.00 speakers on concrete stailizing blocks sunk some twenty or whatever feet into the ground or bedrock or whatever the hell these maniacs do when there is no limit to the budget and all holds barred.
What an absurd idea in the first place. Certainly, home studios, project studios and the like have theri place and YES, you can record what will become a HIT CD on your home stuiod, it could happen, however, if you do manage to extablish yourslef as an artist of any merit, there wiill certainly be times when your home stuiod may not do. You may someday need a truly professional sound and thsu you will be compelled to go to the pros. And one more point. Anyone that has worked in theri home studioi knows that by wearing all the hats, engineer, producer, writer, preformer, mixer, fixit man, cook, gardner, PLUMBER, you diminish your ability in each area since you attention is divided throughout the various tasks. If I had my druthers, I would always work with a designated engineer. My experience in my home stuiod will only make my ability to work with that professional engineer a more rewarding experience. So, fuck that noise!
