Well ,I got my Firebox yesterday. I had the chance to set it up today and thought I would give some preliminary thoughts.
1. It's loud! The sound blasts from the box.
2. I set 3ms latency for GTP3 and got pops.
3. Used 6ms for GTP2 got no pops.
4. Listening to mp3's the sound dropped out for a split second at the start of 2 tracks that I listened to. I have my cpu setting on high. My PC should be able to handle high settings.
5. Recorded sound (on a very much preliminary test) is good. Though, I do have an echoey room - the floor is concrete, so reverby. That's something I'll have to fix. But generally, the recorded sound (I tested acoustic guitar, with a condenser mic that was not set to cut bass boost) is clear to my ears. I think in a properly prepared room it would be fine.
6. When turning the headphone volume all the way to 11 (or even to 9 or 10) I hear faint but noticeable noise. Not popping obviously, but just a hum.
7. The firewire connectors at the back of the box ARE (as I have heard) a little flimsy. They move if pressed, as does the firewire cable. This housing should have been more secure. But it's no trouble if you know it won't be nudged.
8. The software is simple. It is basic stuff really. There are no effects or anything that often come with drivers. It's just the basics.
9. It's brilliant for games/ headphones.
10. It's generally a solid device.
I've only used it for an hour so far, so I am a stranger to the ultimate settings (latency/ cpu use etc) that would suit my particular PC. I like it so far. Good news.
If there are any other Firebox users about, let me know your attitudes to it. I'd be interested in that.
