Well ,I got my Firebox yesterday. I had the chance to set it up today and thought I would give some preliminary thoughts.

1. It's loud! The sound blasts from the box.
2. I set 3ms latency for GTP3 and got pops.
3. Used 6ms for GTP2 got no pops.
4. Listening to mp3's the sound dropped out for a split second at the start of 2 tracks that I listened to. I have my cpu setting on high. My PC should be able to handle high settings.
5. Recorded sound (on a very much preliminary test) is good. Though, I do have an echoey room - the floor is concrete, so reverby. That's something I'll have to fix. But generally, the recorded sound (I tested acoustic guitar, with a condenser mic that was not set to cut bass boost) is clear to my ears. I think in a properly prepared room it would be fine.
6. When turning the headphone volume all the way to 11 (or even to 9 or 10) I hear faint but noticeable noise. Not popping obviously, but just a hum.
7. The firewire connectors at the back of the box ARE (as I have heard) a little flimsy. They move if pressed, as does the firewire cable. This housing should have been more secure. But it's no trouble if you know it won't be nudged.
8. The software is simple. It is basic stuff really. There are no effects or anything that often come with drivers. It's just the basics.
9. It's brilliant for games/ headphones.
10. It's generally a solid device.

I've only used it for an hour so far, so I am a stranger to the ultimate settings (latency/ cpu use etc) that would suit my particular PC. I like it so far. Good news.

If there are any other Firebox users about, let me know your attitudes to it. I'd be interested in that.

Hi,

I got the firebox a couple of months ago, and i love it. I agree with you when you say its loud! I have the main level set to around 9o'clock with my monitors set to the same level. All my other volume settings on around medium and its really loud! It doesnt lose any quality though, the pres are great on the firebox and the ad/da converters are great too. I hope to upgrade to the firepod in the near future, which i hear is exactly the same as the firebox apart from having more ins/outs.

Have fun with it!!

I'm liking it. My software, Guitar Tracks Pro3, can record at 24bit, but when I go to change the bit depth to 24 bit it is telling me that my soundcard does not support it. What's the go there? The Firebox is 24 bit!?

Also, what do you know about the drivers. Is there ASIO and WDM drivers? Mine are on the WDM, but I have read that you should enable the ASIO drivers. How do you do that?

Alot of it is with the Cds that came with the firebox, you have the control panel and the mixer. You can turn the pres on through this, basically change the settings etc.

You enable the ASIO drivers through the actual software, go into the options and have a check for ASIO, then you should be able to switch it.

Ok, I will look into all that. Which drivers do you use? Are you on a pc or a mac?

i used the drivers from the CD. Im using the firebox on a mac. Need anything else? Just give me a shout.

Yeah, what CPU setting are you running it at? low, medium or high? Did you say what latency you use? So, you are not running the ASIO drivers? Has there been an update to the original CD drivers (I don't think so, just checking). Do you know why my software is not letting me set a 24bit depth rate? That's all for now. I'll probably have more to ask as time goes on. I did a little 3 track recording last night and am very happy with the sound. It's amazing to my ears. But I am concerned about why playing an mp3 in media player the sound drops out for a split second at the start of the song.
