Great topic.

Yeah, it's perfect, for a strat sound.

Actually it's more than that. I think you can cover more ground with one than anything else I know of. Yesterday I mixed a 22 song jazz demo for an accomplished musician friend of mine that's intended for local agents. For whatever reasons he used his poolside gig beater instead of one his jazzers. It's a Fernandez (I think) body with a Warmoth neck and EMG pickups. Tone was fat. Imagine going the other way around and doing something like a country demo on his ES 175.

There's a great story from the strat's development dealing with Mary Kay that you won't see in the books that I'll post if this thread goes on long enough.

Then it's not a Strat. The topic title is "the fender stratocaster is perfect."
To me, the Fender Stratocaster is the standard 3-single coil Stratocaster. When you start getting into variations and copies and FLoyd Roses and humbuckers, etc. all bets are off.

Think about EVH's #1. Was it a Strat? It sounded more like a Les Paul to me.
I'll say it again; The Fender Strat is a good, versatile guitar, but there are sounds it just can't get.

I disagree. To me the strat is a concept just like a Les Paul.

yes!!! thus the question is : is the strat a perfect concept?

If what your trying to say is that when you get older, your musical taste changes eg gay songs don't seem to be that gay any more. Then i would agree. Do you like the shadows by any chance?

Joke :D
I've heard of them but I'm not sure I've ever heard them???

Perfect?

Not for me at least.

I've tried to like Strats...I really have.

When I was in high school & college, I really dug Hendrix, so I wanted one. I got one when I was probably a junior in college. But I was never able to coax tones that I dug out of it.

After college, I actually traded it in on a '78 Mustang. I really couldn't get cool tones out of it, either...but then, it really wasn't a "real" Mustang. So, I traded it in on a Les Paul. After that, I never really looked back.

But in recent years, I started jonesing for a Tele. I finally got one this past Christmas. I liked it so much, I bought another one in February.

This got me thinking...after being a Les Paul guy for so long and now digging Tele's...maybe I'll actually like a Strat now.

Well, I've tried several recently.

And I still don't really get tones I dig out of them.

I technically have a Strat still...a Squier my dad got for free from a Marriott convention, and for now that's fine. It works for getting a Strat sort of tone when I want one, and maybe one day I'll buy a nicer one just to have that tone in the stable, but I'm not in any hurry because that Strat tone just isn't one that I want very often.

But for those who like them...more power to you. They just aren't my cup o' tea.

I hate people who say strats are crap and the dont say why; or people who give out about them because 'everyone plays strats'. theres a reason everyone plays them; theyre fucking amazing.

What I love about a Strat;
The number 2 and 4 position on the pickup selector for that unique phasy sound that IS a Strat.
The neck pickup is creamy sounding, not unlike the neck picup of a Tele.
But if you need a warmer, thicker sound you need humbuckers. Sticking humbuckers into a Strat, it's not a Strat anymore. Now couple those humbuckers with a hollow body and it's another sound alltogether. I love Fenders but they're just one color and like lots of crayons.

Good analogy. Yeah, it's just a crayon....but certainly a primary color.

Well, I'm just sticking to the topic of this thread. It says "The Fender Stratocaster..."

a good question would be :"exacly what is a fender stratocaster?"

definatley along with the tele & lespaul

I think the tele is a lot phater than the strat and the phased sound inbetween the pickups is more pronounced. The strat is more jangley, i love them both to be honest. (before another argument breaks out and people start crying this is my opinion :D and it is applied to standard american moldels i haven't used a custom or anything like that, i'm poor)

Even if there is a sexier better feeling better sounding guitar out there, people will still go for stats teles lezzers (Les Pauls) etc because these models are the cells in which the musical blood is pumped. There on MTV they're the first ones you see when you enter a guitar shop, there the ones that were used by the greats. They're part of worldwide culture.

I agree with you 100%, its hard to beat a strat, especially one from the 50s or 60s...PERFECTION

There is no perfect guitar...only a perfect guitar for the situation... I like Strats for blusey stuff but other guitars work too. I've also heard people play a Strat using a nice Fender tube amp and make it sound horrible. Horrible tone... In any case I find something like a Les Paul more perfect than a Strat....

I used to think all Fenders were crap, mainly because of their construction. C'mon, a bolt-on neck? How cheap can you get? I felt (and still do) that, purely in terms of the guitar as a well- or poorly-constructed object, Gibson was the better, higher quality guitar.

Not that it matters. Strats, Teles, and the rest of the Fender product line have their unique tones, in no small part because of the way they are put together. Gibsons can't reproduce those tones. And I don't think Fenders suffer from any weakness at the neck joint, and, hey, those necks are a lot easier to replace, aren't they?

Changing the volume on a Strat during play is a totally frustrating experience.

Especially if you're trying to switch pick ups at the same time :(

That is one factor i've never looked into when buying a guitar, hmm this is poorly constructed, i dont want something that is badly constructed. If it's an effect pedal etc ok i understand, but i've never had a guitar break on me. And if anything does look dodgy electronically i'll rewire it with better components. Damn, guitar's broke again. Stupit gitter. :D

I feel the same way...just about ALL nice, well constructed, high quality guitars ARE at LEAST 'Set-neck' or 'Neck-through'. I always think of 'Bolt-ons' as cheap guitars, though, I realize there are some decent ones about.

You definitely get MORE sustain, etc, with through and set necks!...and the necks 'feel' SO much better without that DAMN, 'bolt-on' joint! :D

You have to be really quick - especially if you're hunting pickup position #2 or #4 (and even more especially if you're playing an older Strat without detents at those positions! )
