Hello everybody! Propman here.
I lurk around the boards here and don't really post a lot anymore but I recently did a cover of one of Pete's classics and he insisted that I post it for approval/disapproval...

-Adam.
P.S. Yes, I FINALLY got a Dropbox!

ive never heard a cover of someones song in here but boy if they sound this good...more please

you really owned it...and testament to heats song writing abilities...it really lost his signature feel and turned into something completely different

Ive got to leave now but Im gonna give this several listens when I get back...

great mix too...nearly forgot 10/10

I listened to this earlier while I was cooking tea - you've done an excellent job. As KC says, you've made the cover your own, while keeping an excellent tune. Good vocals, good mix and a good creative take.

Triffic work - props to the prop man.

I'm glad someone broke the ice here...I think the market (such as there is one) for heatmiser-related music is a bit saturated right now with the jesus thing, so not the best timing.

I am so glad you did this Adam. It really is so different, yet just familiar enough to me to retain something of the original. It is very interesting to see what elements you kept and what you left out. It went from a 7 minute pseudo psychedelic number to a succinct slower pop kind of tune. You really went off with the space ship sound effects vs. the lame car horn thing I had going on. Mix sounds really good to me.

There was a thread last Summer that I think Greg started, inviting people to cover each other's tunes which I thought was a great idea. It didn't really take off though.

I think Greg might've covered a Rami tune. I think VHS might've done one...uh, rob might've done a manslick tune? I eventually covered one of Rob's songs...great fun! Not something a lot of people have time for though I guess...

Love how you just let your vox hang out in the middle by itself like that. Really showcases your talent. great voice, great arrangement and great tune.

Songs like these make hanging around HR worthwhile.

Thank you KC! That's really high praise. I'm glad Heat suggested I post this because it's really encouraging to read these comments. I've been in a (somewhat) self-centered musical bubble for a while and was losing confidence. I think I'm going to escape from the vacuum and start posting regularly here again.

Thanks a lot, Rob! (Did your tea turn out OK?)

About the 'space' effects: I figured you'd notice but I used the exact same sound effects you utilized. When I heard the tune I thought 'The count-in and siren clips sound like they came right off that little electronic drum kit I got for my sixth birthday!' so I had to put them in.

As for the song itself, you did a fantastic job writing/performing it. It's one of my favorite songs and I don't just mean on HR.

Damn man that sounds great

Thanks a lot, Arc'!

And much in the same way, comments like yours make me want to continue making music. Thank you, Clili!

Great to hear your voice again Adam!
Excellent re-imagining of a heatune.
I enjoyed the FX/sounds off Foley artistry too.
Reminded me in parts of the Flamin' Lips and of some moments on the tracks on Bowie's Space Oddity LP
Is that mandolin I hear?
Cool stuff - you usually supply something thought provoking or surprising.
Cheers

Am I the only one not getting it? The lyrics are completely changed, the melody is totally different and there are spaceship noises everywhere! For cripes sake, I liked Paper Cup just the way it was.

Good to see Passenger Airbag back! I still keep Belierely in regular rotation.

I don't know the original, so I can't compare them.

My only nit with this mix is that I heard number of lip smacks and things during the quieter parts.

A Flaming Lips comparison is ALWAYS welcome. (I don't listen to Bowie very much...) 'Heatune' ay? you never cease to choose creativity over the red, squiggly underline that's sure to follow. You should work for a branding agency. As for the 'mandolin'... it's just a modest little ukulele. Thank for listening, Ray!

The original was so good that I decided to write a new and completely different song and call it a cover. Anything else would have been disrespectful. :D

Oh, gees... Belie! I'm glad you like that one so much, Vomit. It was very out of character for me. As for your 'nit', it bugged/bugs me too. I've just never been schooled in the proper manner of excising that particular quirk from the mix. Thanks for the listen and the complement(s), Vomit!

In that case it's good with me. It sounds nothing like the 'Paper Cup' I know and love, and you did make it your own, but I did find your version a bit derivative of another great heat tune 'The End of the Road'.

Aww, shame - I thought for a moment there that the forum was about to enter it's 'Dylan-gone-electric' phase, with the Heatmiser purists entrenching themselves bitterly against the Heatmiser revisionists. We could have had a Judas smiley commissioned and everything :(

As Heat says, the covers thread from a while back was a lot of fun to do. I know there were only a few takers, but that didn't detract from how much fun it was to be involved in, both from the view of covering and being covered. Adding your own stamp is about 90% of the fun of doing covers for me.

On propman's tune, if we're talking stylistic similarities I hear some Sufjan Stevens in the mix too. Particularly his more recent stuff with more electronic flourishes. It's a good place to be.

i think everyone sounds like the Bee Gees...I have a disco enhancer vst...

I listened again last night, but it was post pub so I didnt post (I learned years ago) and I still loved it :)

Sounds like heat went to mars for the day and got attacked by some really sweet cute aliens with an acoustic guitar.

Nice mix, cool re-thinking of the song.

I'd add some drums at least part way through. But, whatever, it sounds cool.

Well, that song was definitely an inspiration but I thought It was subtle enough not to be obvious...
I guess I should be a little more opaque next time.

I've heard many good things about Sufjan Stevens and I tried to listen to one of his albums but found it hard to sit through as many of the songs sounded very alike and the lyrics weren't very understandable (to me.) Perhaps I need to listen again.

Yay, I passed that wasted test! Thanks again, KC!

Ha-ha! I love that imaginative description. Certain comments are wall-hangers and that one's gettin' tacked up on said wall for sure.

As for the drums, I've been trying to stay away from drums a bit because I don't have the resources to record them correctly and I'm tired of electronic drums. I do agree it would've been nice, though.

Thanks, Aaron!

Anyway - all kidding aside, I really like it. There are a couple great turns of phrase that take on new meanings when delivered like this. It's got me of a mind to cover one of the lesser known heat tunes, at the moment I'm thinking Old Brown Shoe, or maybe Savoy Truffle. I dunno.

Thank you, Chuck! I really appreciate it.
(What about 'Long, Long, Long?' That's another VERY underrated Heat tune.)

Yeah - Long, Long, Long is an absolute masterpiece. That's the one that started me thinking 'what would heat do?' every time I pick up an instrument.

For me, the WWHD factor came in with 'Sour Milk Sea.' Even though he wound up giving the song away to Greg_L, I think it exudes what he's all about.
