Dear Abby...

Dont get me wrong right? He's not that bad.
But the point is I dont mind borrowin to a point and shit.
But I bought all of my equipment with my life savings ya know? So I take super good care of everything. So I get no respect from this guy. He just wants to use my shit and use me as a equipment locker...What do you guys think?
Used in Wisconsin

Never a Lender or a Borrower Be...........

What U weak or sumthin'!!?? A Sucka'!!?? Some kinda' Punk-@ss!!??

Sorry to be so harsh, but only YOU can ALLOW some-1 to take
advantadge of you!! You and YOU ALONE!!!!
Until you learn how to say "NO", expect to be used and abused!
If this person decides to end the friendship over your refusal to never loan out your gear again, then he was NEVER a friend to begin with!!!

There's a sticker that's very common on the tool boxes of good mechanics. It's made by Snap-On, and says simply:

No tools loaned. Please don't ask.

Explain to him nicely how you feel about it. Either he will apologize or cop a tude. If he cops a tude tell him he can borrow anything he wants to for the night in exchange for his girlfriend (if she's hot). If he doesn't have a hot girlfriend he's SOL.

:D

I make it a policy that my studio stuffs do not leave the studio! :)

Apart from buying them with really hard earned money... I make sure these stuffs are in their best condition for recording. :)

Tell him if he wants to borrow it, then fine, BUT he has to pay to help you cover insurance costs. Just make sure your "hire" charges are adequate.

I don't see the problem here...... call him up and tell him to return your shit, and don't let him borrow it anymore.

Are you stupid ?

Dear Abby, Dear Abby
Well, I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sittin' in the back seat
Juat a shootin' the breese
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Siiiiiiigned,
Just Married
:D :D :D

I'm gonna let my 120lb Bull Mastiff have sex with the third person that asks to borrow my gear....

The second one just left! ;)

I am totally opposite you guys..

I am always lending gear.... In fact, I had my $350 AT 4033 and my $800 Davisound amp loaned out at the same time...

I will loan anything to a good friend.... My friendships are based on trust, and I know the people will take care of it, and if anything was damaged, my buddies would most definately play for the damage with no questions asked..

When the stuff leaves the house, I make sure it is in good working order, clean and damage free, and it better come back that way... It's an understanding that doesn't even need to be mentioned between my friends and I.

Now, if it is a case where there is an argument about damage and the friend refuses to pay what he ruined.. Well, you obviously don't mean much to that "friend" if he is trying to screw you.

Yeah, there may be a little wear and tear going on the gear that I paid for my my hard earned cash, but I know that if my car were to breakdown in the middle of knowhere, those same friends would come and "rescue" me, and there would be wear and tear on there car resulting in the journy to "rescue" me.... The tables always turn.

Thats how friendship works.... I think if you have to worry about loaning gear to a good friend, you just might need to reconsider the friendship. I mean there must be some underlying issues of non-trust... If it is a REAL good friend, you shouldn't even have to think twice before loaning gear to them.

Anyways.. Just my 2 Cents... And a Generalization.. I know your all gonna have your seperate case scenarios in response to this post..

Just wanted to throw these thoughts into the pot.

Yes.. if you were a close friend who I trusted and you lived near me, I would most definately say yes, and lend you the car for a night.

Joe

I've got an ADAT loaned to one friend who's had it for about 9 months and a Mackie 1604 loaned to another friend for the last 2 years. At least they're getting some use.:D

You guys have too much equipment to loan..

I let them borrow my mixer..... That's ok I have 5 more.
I let them borrow my Neuman.... That's ok I have 5 more.

Just messing with ya Joe. ;)

I don't need it this weekend, I need it next weekend. :D :D :D

So, when am I gonna get that 2" 24 track and the Neve desk back? Huh? Huh? Huh?

As others have said, you can only be "used" if you allow someone to "use" you (as a matter of fact that is actually a standard Dear Abby reply).

I will on occasion loan gear to a friend - but someone who is always borrowing something crosses the line from friend to leach.

I have a couple of long time friend swho have studios and we may loan gear back and forth - for certain projects (but it is a shared balanced relationship - not one sided).

Although I tend to be much less trusting and generous than I used to be - I do share Voxvendor's veiw that friendships and relationships are built on trust - I have a few friends who I can trust to help me out of jams and in turn I try to help them.

But, it sounds like Marty's situation may be way too one sided.

:)

I'll tell you what... If you come to jamfest, I will let you take the Benz for a spin... It's yours for a few hours, go anywhere you want with it!..

Seriously.

I have no hang-ups about loaning stuff.

Joe

Yeah guys my situation is pretty one sided. The only thing this guy has that I dont have is a keyboard. At least he only wants to borrow things that I have more than one of. Like headphones, and mics. But now the guy wants to borrow my $500.00 condenser mic. Its the kinda situation where he could drop it and then give it back to me and then I'd say hey whats wrong with my mic? And he'd probably say he doesnt know anything about it.

Yeah looks like I struck a nerve with this topic...it feels good to see the thread take off like this...thanks for the opinions guys
