Correct title

The comprehensive ranking for mainstream large diaphragm condenser microphones under one grand for vocals.
--------------------------------------------

This ranking is definitely not "comprehensive" but I am hoping that it will be after everyone has kindly added their thoughts.

Also feel free to reply with a correction. For example, if you think that the cc414 is actually better than the tlm 103.

Feel free to add any mics that you think shoul be considered. For example, I have heard a lot of talk about Oktava mics.

I have made this ranking by reading all the posts and for a mic to be ranked better than another one, it has to have been recommended over that other one by someone who has actually used both mics
------------------------------------------
OK !! Here Goes.

1st. Newmann TLM 103 $990
.2 AKG C414uls $800

As I said, it is not comprehensive. I don't even know how mics like the at4047 or 4043 or any of the blueberry or cad mics fit in here, but please help me, help the world make it worth looking at

my bad.

Yes it is not the at4043 but the audio technica 4033

Did you see that cyanjaguar, the price of the Rode NT-2 went up from the first post to the second-inflation is something worth considering I guess.

Are you saying that the AKG C3000B is better than the NT-1, I hope not.

For the $500US range (give or take up to $100US or so), my narrowed-down large diaphragm condenser mic considerations to try and compare to eachother would probably be:

1. Audio Technica AT4047/SV. www.audio-technica.com

2. Audio Technica 4050/CM5. www.audio-technica.com

3. Langevin CR3A (if you can swing just a little more). www.manleylabs.com

4. Oktava MC-012 preamp body from The Sound Room only with an RTT M1/M3 capsule. www.oktava.com

5. Shure KSM32. www.shure.com

6. Soundelux U97. www.soundelux.com/mics

my god you guys go on about microphones - they are all very good mikes - everyone of them = but can you all use them????

CyanJaguar:
You'd better include the Oktava or RE and myself are gonna snatch Monty's rake and whoop you with it. :D

My personal picks:
Elmo Red Mic (Comes on the Sesame Street Karoke unit) $7.00

Any mic made by Fisher-Price $5.25-$11.23

Radio Shack Dynamic (From the Sound Room Only)$59.00

The Mr. Microphone Line $14.95 (Canadian residents add $1.00)

Elmo Red vs Fisher Price

Ok, I've narrowed my vocal mic down to these two... what one do you think I should get? Do the Fisher Price mics come in red?

Ok, so far you guys have been talking about large diaphragm mics, right? How about things like overhead mics? The Shure SM81's seem nice, they have the high-pass filter, but they cost a lot. Are they really such great mics?

Yes, yes, yes... the TLM 103 IS a Neumann, BUt the AKG 414 (any of the models) is a better mic because it has multiple patterns, a low-cut filter switch, an attenuator for high levels. Ultimately a more versatile mic, with just as high sound quality as the TLM.

My $0.02

Not IMHO. Over 3? years ago when I was ready to purchase a matched-pair of "all-around" workhorse large diaphragm condenser mics, I was first going to purchase Audio Technica AT4050/CM5s. But after hearing the AKG TLII (using it alot in school), I was most definitely goiung to go with those. Then I heard the AKG B/ULSs... Way better for "all-around" workhorses... Most definitely going with those. Then the Neumann TLM 103s came-out about in February. By April or May (can't remember which), I bought a matched-pair of 103s. Haven't regreded it since! Personally, I find the my 103s to be a lot more versetile than a TLII even though it has three polar patterns and overall, in generel, I find I like the "sound" of my 103s more than the B/ULS'.
