The cheapest rack.....

Go to a lumber yard, find the bin where they throw away scrap wood, (Home depot's) have a free bin of such wood...

Find a 1X3 or 1X4 a few feet long... (Or you could buy a new 8ft for about 2 dollars)

Cut the board in equal lengths, and attach your largest rack mountable gear to the bottom of each piece using 3/4 in drywall screws.

This will support all the rest of your gear because the weight will be at the bottom.

Add each unit one above the other, repeat as necessary.

* You could stain or paint the wood for a nicer look, but you said cheap!

 Dom:p

:D That's pretty cheap! An upgrade from there would be to get these:

Watch out with these though, you may wanna get a tap to clean the threads... They're cheap though. To get any better than that you would want to get some plywood and make a box to mount these into. For that you would probably want half inch ply wood and some 1x1s for stringers to strengthen.

I agree about the rack rails, and it's still very cheap to buy a pair of them and some lumber. All you need are four pieces of wood that are 18 inches or so deep. Two of them are cut to the height you need, and two to the width you need. Then you either glue, screw, or nail them together and then put the rack rails in. Very cheap.

I've built a number of racks for my own studio, plus a few custom designed things. I'm not a woodworker at all, so if I can do it then ANYBODY can do it! :-)

It really does save a lot of money to make one's own racks, plus there's the added advantage of having the rack be exactly the size and type you need.

Find a good Army surplus outlet

I have some rails, old Army stuff. They are aluminum channels, 3" deep with one side drilled and tapped. Strong enough you could drive a truck over them and they are very light! I picked them up for almost nothing. Unforturnately the outlet I used is out of business.

Oh yeah... Don't forget the black spray paint, or semi-gloss if you use house paint... :D

You dont even have to purchase the rails if you wanted to use wood rails. Just screw directly in to some 1X2's..

I was just saying the rails as an upgrade. Heck. You could build one for free if you do what Dom said and get some 1x's from Home Depot's free bin if you had some screws...

I'll second that device. Cheap, and serviceable.

Got one myself.....

... i need it... help me find it...

I don't know if they are any different over there but here a plastic milkcrate is the same size as a rack mount. Some you can even screw into. That's definately the cheapest, lol.

Well if that's the case then I have about 10 racks right now! SWEET!!!

That'd probably get an interesting look from a client. :D

I think MF.com has those things for about $10 less, for those of us who are truly cheap...

Or, if you are like me and don't want to build anything (except a devoted following for my music, a ha ha), try this one:

I jus got it last week and it is perfectly serviceable.

For about $10 more, you could get one of the really nice homemade ones that Jason Bird (I believe that's his name) was selling around here. His address is:

I think quite a few people here bought them, and been very happy with them. As soon as I increase my rackmount gear to more than 1, I'm going to pick one up also :D

A 12-space wood rack for $40? That sounds a bit too god to be true... Allow me to remain sceptical. ;)

Besides, he doesn't ship outside the US or Canada anyway.
