oh, forgot one thing - put me on the list for the autographed cd please. seriously. heh

don't you know that you can count me in!

well you know its gonna be alright!

My wife heard me listening to your tune and assumed I was listening to the Beatles...Now that's a huge accomplishment. I listen to a lot of Beatles and she thought it was just a tune that she had never heard before.

Nice Job...BTW: I would agree with an earlier post: This song has some great song writing and would sound good to do an alternate take in an "Unplugged" style. Keep up the good work.

Well, you certainly have things going right now. I posted something else earlier...guess it didn't go through, strange. Anyways, it was just basically saying that I listened to all of your other songs and I love them all. Especially "So Long" - killer song...tell your gf she has quite an amazing voice (you too). The harmony you guys share is really unique...sounds awesome. Hate to draw another beatles analogy but...it almost does have a John/Paul sound harmony wise...maybe just becuase you sound so much like John though. (actually...i think you sound like both...kind of weaving in and out of each other).

Also - i read on another thread of yours, if having 2 singers was confusing..I don't think so at all. I like the contrast you guys have...do you have a picture up anywhere? I'd like to put a face with these songs I am going to be singing all day ;)

oh...one other thing I was wondering...does she write her songs, and you write yours? Or is it all colaboration and just comes down to who sounds best on which cut? very encouraging that you've only been at this for 5 years or so....becuase your mixes are excellent...gives a newbie hope that good things might come quicker than expected.

So long,
Wes

Hi Wes,
Thanks very much for the compliments on the vocals, and the john/paul harmony comment is really great! Glad, too, that the 2 singer thing seems to work. When we first started this project, and were trying to deal with those "biz" people, they wanted just one singer (guess who!?), but that would be no fun (for the other one)! As far as pictures go, we had some up before, but took em down cuz we like the idea of people just hearing the music, but we may put them back up. Eventually, we want to get a decent website with all that stuff. As far as the songwriting goes, for these particular songs, we cowrote them, though I have a lot more experience writing songs, so, basically, it's mainly my input. Except for the lousy bits, which I will gladly give credit to her!:p :)
Ironically, there are lyrics that I came up with that I hate, but she won't let me change!!  ;) :D And as far as deciding who sings what, we try and split it up 50-50, so whoever needs one, gets one.

Thanks again, really appreciate it!!

wes, kelly, and whyte ice-Sure!! :)

David-wow, that is cool, tell your wife, "thank you very mooch" (in a liverpudlian accent!). Hmmm, will have to try a stripped down version. Actually, I'm thinking that the next batch of songs, I definitely want to do more stripped down, cuz I'm getting sort of fed up with strings and junk! :) Seriously, thanks a lot for checking it out, and the kind words.

Guess I'll put my two cents in.
I have to agree with everyone else... very nice recording.
You must have spent a huge amount of time on it.
Any chance of a complete list of hardware and/or software you are using?
I would really like to know.

Again, very very good!

Regards, Don

damn...my new cable connection isn't loading the mp3. wonder what's wrong....I get all the others. I'd take a the URL vs the hyperlink...unless they are the same

well...wadda ya know... using AOL, and loading to my harddrive, I got a listen:) for all the aol haters, I wonder why this worked....anywazzz..

good song writing.
The things I like are: certain sounds (like the quick guitar part at 2:11 )are only played once. Play it once, and move on. The strings are nice...with neat chopped endings at times (2:03). the compositional arrangements are good too. Nice chord textures, rather than your power triads (like I do!). the break at 2:28...and ONE break ONLY in the song. The piano break at early 3:00...a new texture/theme, with the bass line...nice touch

things less appreciated: the lyrics "buzz is over" is repeated a fair amount of times. The music writing I give an "A". In comparison, I give the singing a "B". I can hear the Beatles similarities other suggest, but I don't think your voice sounds at all like Lennon (and that is good...no need to emulate, eh?). Also, the recording does have that "warm" feel to it I guess...but I might also describe it as a lack of *sheen*. It does sound "old school" recording, and if given some New York (or I'd even take some Nashville) polish, I think the quality would jump up quite a bit. However, the song writing and harmony arrangements more than make up for any lacking qualities that MIGHT exist.

nice job...especially for a home reccer!!

Hi Don, thanks very much. Yes and no on the time spending question. I suppose it's relative. Sometimes I do things really fast, other times I feel like spend hours and hours and days and days and months and months!

The gear is,
hardware: Brent Averill API preamp, Distressor, Fender bass, Epiphone Casino, Yamaha Stage Custom Drums with a cheap Slingerland maple snare, Alesis QS8 (don't use the sounds), KRK V8s, Vox AC-15 (borrowed, don't have anymore :( ), Martin DM acoustic

software: Emu Paris 2.1, Gigasampler, Waves Ren compressor

Thanks a lot!

Hey mixmkr, glad you were able to get the tune! Thanks a lot for the things you thought were good!

As far as the things not so good, true about the buzz is over repeating, I thought about that, too, but, I don't know, figured it's a "hook" :) .

Regarding the singing, I suppose I'd agree, I was sort of wanting to do it over, but then thought, ugh! I'm really paranoid about singing. What exactly do you think would improve it?

And the "old school" sound, I guess I think of the "old school" as the "new school", so, in a way, that's really cool that you would say that. On the other hand, obviously, that sheen and professional sound would be great. Would that sheen come if a pro mixed it? I imagine they could do that through mixing, probably on a better system with better gear, etc. Or would it have to be entirely retracked to get that sheen?

Thanks again for the feedback!

Great work Macle - I think almost every comment has been made, so I have nothing else to add :).

Alaking.

if a pro mixed it.....I would say yes. Especially in a comfortable environment for that engineer. Retracked....not necessarily. Take this to the top level, for instance. If a "Roger Nichols" type mixed this, on the equipment "he" wanted....do you think it would be better or just the same?(and I think we can agree it would not be worse...in most cases) This is why I believe certain people get away with doing this in home environments (after all Roger works at home too). You happen to be among the better of the home reccors, hence your solid attempts. However, listen to your mixes thru a pair of $15000 Westlakes, using the top Lexi reverbs, thru what ever needed outboard stuff is required with the knobs twiddle by a platinum creating engineer....you get the picture. BUT, there's always exceptions, and rules broken by people doing fine stuff, just like you.

Just two words : GREAT SONGS !

To me the important thing is that i kept on listening to them over and over....

Lyrics, a bit of this there and a bit of that down there.... are all very precious comments, but the bottom line is that you can really enjoy these songs !!!

Thanx for sharing such nice piece of music !!

Alaking-Thanks very much!!

mixmkr-I appreciate your feedback and insight. Thanks again for checking out the tune!

jumpingflash-Thank you! I don't really know what you mean by this: "a bit of this there and a bit of that down there....are all very precious comments ", but I think that could be a good lyric! Mind if I use it? :) Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

And I should say, btw, that my girlfriend really appreciates all the cool things everyone has said. She says, "hi and thanks!!" :D

I didn't read through the entire thread, macle, so some of these comments could be redundant. (And I only listened to Buzz)

Very, very Beatleesque. McCartney, from around the Penny Lane era. Nice song, and overall good performance. Nice arrangement, too.

On the negative side, I thought the mix was a little cloudy. None of the instruments seemed very distinct - but I'm listening on computer speakers, so...

Overall nice job.

Macle-

You have once again done a great job blending very pop-py tunes with a darker satyrical lyric. You are getting a great sound with your recordings. I have been listening to several unsigned groups nationally, and you are better than any of them, hands down. Get yourself some good management and I think you'll be very successful at this. I think you have a great ear, also...which will help open produding jobs up later on down the road.

If you DO decide you want to shop these songs, let me know. I have friends with Virgin V2 and some others who are always looking. I have to admit, a few of them have heard these MP3's and like them already.....:)

Shoot an email if you'd like and free help or advise on the promotion thing mike_gossett@homerecording.net

Please, please list your signal chain, esp. the synth sounds. I think this music would suit the UK\Europe market more than the American one (at the moment anyway), but it could definately make someone a whole heap of money. Please look after your business right and let it be you.

I disagree about ending the song at the climax, I love the ending, the piano, shaker, strings and meandering bass are beautiful.

I was wondering what all the hype/posts were all about here and I am kicking myself for not dl sooner. Macle I absolutely hate Pop music of pretty much any kind, any, in most instances I cringe purely at the word and everything it implies; be it music, movies, fads in general. On that note I fuckin (sorry but completely necessary) LOVED that tune.

The last Pop song that actually got me as excited and in general happy was probably Oasis' Wonderwall. Granted they are ridiculously, well ridiculous people (the Gallaghers anyways) but what can I say it was a good pop tune. Before that was some of Radioheads earlier stuff and just young Britpop in general: Stone Roses, Blur, etc., and the only other pop (not just rock-pop) I really like is from the 60's. Again I LOVED that song.

I'm a new school electronic music guy and Radiohead and Sigur Ros are the closest thing to Rock/Pop I come usually, in terms of quality listening. It's really exciting to me, not only cause you're a home rec'er and I can tell all my friends that we aren't actually all schmucks here, but, more importantly that I got excited about a Pop song. The longer it goes without a good pop tune around the worse my perception of the music community becomes.

So basically I'm just sayin thanks, you rock, you're gonna be big, no doubt, and keep us lowly home rec'ers in the loop when you're rich and famous!
