The Buzz Is Over

So - what exactly is "pushing the boundries" anyway?? If it sounds good and people like it - people like it.

If everyone pushed the boundries we would have all progressive rock bands like Dream Theater or just plain crazy shit like Beck.

Don't get me wrong - as a musician I love technically intense music - but I also like a good melody...

Macle - just the act of making music is fundamentally what is most important...if you're satisfied with what you accomplish, then you are doing something right...the amazing thing about artists is that we each have our own unique ways of approaching creation, yet we all share a commonality... i mentioned in a different post that it is good to learn all styles, even at the most basic levels...so as to broaden the field...for years i rote obscure arrangements of words and sound that nobody, sometimes not even myself, understood...why was i doing it that way? i cam to the conclusion most recently that it was because i was in the beginning stages of creation and i didn't know how to write songs in an effective manner...i am now trying to actually write songs in a format that is pleasant and effective...i admire and appreciate the most simple of songs if they are well executed..even beethoven, mozart and the such started out playing Mary Had A Little Lamb. :)

Zip - i agree with you, if people like it then people like it...hands down...i just have an inner hunger for something new and exciting...though i'm almost always happy listening to The Beatles...The Beatles are a perfect example...they almost always wrote within the same chord progressions, yet they almost always found a fresh way of doing it...even if it was a trill of a single note in the chorus...it isn't so complicated.. :)

But that being said my favorite band is still Dream Theater! Nothing like 4 different time signatures in ONE song... :D

I was just being a smartass and referring to the first song I heard with her singing.

I found myself humming some of the tunes the next day at work, very catchy. The arrangements are great. It's tough to pull of complex Brian Wilson/ Jeff Lynne types of arrangements and you do it very well. The overall sound quality is exellent.

What are you using to record?

I have many musician friends who are prog "purists" and I get tired of hearing..."that's a good song - but it's too simple".

WTF does that mean anyway??

A good song is a good song...complex or simple.
 
After switching ISP's so I can actually down load a song without the connection crapping out,I finally got to hear this song and only two words could sum it up:

FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the drums,the sound you've got going on with them is very authentic!

TexRoadKill-Thanks very much for the Brian Wilson/Jeff Lynne comparison, that it is a great compliment, and I'm by no means worthy! I'm using Emu Paris, which, from what I understand, is being dropped by Emu. So that's a bummer!

By authentic,I meant they sound like a drum mix from back in the 60's instead of the punched up,gated and compressed stuff you hear on a lot of modern stuff.They really breathe and have a lot of dynamic life to them.

Good song. I really like All About You more though.

Everytime you say in the song, "The Buzz Is Over", it reminds me of that Ben Folds song, "Rockin' The Suburbs".

Keep up the good work macle.

The stuff I write is alot like this, very beatles influenced but I'm still learning the whole recording process.

guess I have to gush as well and say this is an awesome song. I think for a lot of people on the forum it probably has that "back to the drawing board" sound if you catch my drift ;) The comment about the drums was right on - the whole mix has a very convincing 60s feel/warmth to it...without sounding like it is even trying for it.

Your studio setup certainly sounds nice. If you ever find yourself with some free time and a digital camera - I'd love to see some pics of the rooms you recorded in, how they are treated and such. I'd kill to be able to get a sound like this....one thing I was curious about is how long have you been recording/producing? You certainly sound like you have a lot of experience. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the thread thus far - what are you monitoring on?

Hi wes-thanks! The room is just an average bedroom, about 12 x 12. I tried to deaden it as much as possible with carpet on the floor, some drapes, and got some foam stuff that's for bed pads or something (it looks like that audio stuff, but it's not!), and placed some around the walls. I'm sure an audio guy would laugh! There's definitely problems in the room, (I think it was worse before I deadened it though). I have the KRK V8s, which were really hard to get used to, I had been using stereo speakers before that, so in comparison, these are really bright, and the sound is so different. As far as recording goes, I guess about 5 years ago, I got a Roland VS880, and started making demos, and then around 2 years ago, my girlfiend and me thought it would be a good idea to try to make a CD :eek:, so I really tried getting into gear, and all that, reading up on the internet, comparing mics, preamps, trying to do things "right", etc. The whole thing was becoming a huge nightmare (long story, but everything was going wrong!), so soon enough, I gave up on the technical stuff. And it's a bit more fun now! :)

Well, you certainly have things going right now. I posted something else earlier...guess it didn't go through, strange. Anyways, it was just basically saying that I listened to all of your other songs and I love them all. Especially "So Long" - killer song...tell your gf she has quite an amazing voice (you too). The harmony you guys share is really unique...sounds awesome. Hate to draw another beatles analogy but...it almost does have a John/Paul sound harmony wise...maybe just becuase you sound so much like John though. (actually...i think you sound like both...kind of weaving in and out of each other).

Also - i read on another thread of yours, if having 2 singers was confusing..I don't think so at all. I like the contrast you guys have...do you have a picture up anywhere? I'd like to put a face with these songs I am going to be singing all day ;)

oh...one other thing I was wondering...does she write her songs, and you write yours? Or is it all colaboration and just comes down to who sounds best on which cut? very encouraging that you've only been at this for 5 years or so....becuase your mixes are excellent...gives a newbie hope that good things might come quicker than expected.
