The Buzz Is Over

Very nice listening - somewhat remiscent of Sgt Peppers Paul McCartney. I thought the mix sounded very professional - good job!

Just like the last time you posted here, macle, I don't really have a whole lot of solid contructives. Its sounds fantastic.

There is something I think I am hearing in the backing vocals that sticks out to me, but could just as easily be intentional. For most of the song the backing vox blend really well and sit into the background. During the last part of the song (all the "The Buzz is Over"s) the backing vox sound a little different and stand out more. Is there a different effect on them?

Great stuff! :)

Chris

Excellent stuff, as usual. ;)

Great song, nice mix.

Who are you?
Where are you from?
There's virtually no info available about you.
Do share.... okay?

Also, can you make it possible for the other tunes to play on something else besides "RealPlayer?" I just can't get that damned thing working... it sucks.
I've heard Fingerprints and Joke, and they're great. I'd like to hear the other tunes, too. :)

Again, great work...

Buck

Mikey_45- thanks very much!! I'm a huge Beatle fan, so I really appreciate the sgt. pepper/paul mccartney reference. Thanks very much for checking it out.

Chris- thanks!! on the background vox, well there's 2 different backgrounds. there's the harmony background that my girlfriend does, and then there's the sort of group harmonies that we both do. also, we just did the group harmonies using the Rode NTK, which we didn't have when we did the other vocals, and I think the NTK cuts through more, so I think that makes a difference, too.
Thanks very much!!

Buck-thank you!! well, at this point, there's really not much to tell. basically, me (and my girlfriend) are trying to make a CD ourselves, which, turns out, is hard!! (which is why the feedback we get here is invaluable and greatly appreciated.) so right now, we're just kind of concentrating on the music, and not so much promoting and stuff. but when we finish, we're gonna try the next step, and maybe sort of come out of our shells.:o

sorry about the real player thing. a number of people were complaining about the downloads not working, so i thought the real player would make it easier, even though the sound is bad. as soon as i can, i'll try to get both going.

thanks for checking out "buzz", and thanks very much for the kind words!!

Well, you are doing something very right for all that hard work. Your stuff sounds amazing. Let us know when the CD is done, eh? :)

Take care,
Chris

Hope the download works.

Thanks,

Wow... first... your songwriting is rather accomplished i must say... this has a really nice, wonderfully layered quality... a lot happening... but all tied together and unified.

The production is astounding. I can't get over the bass tracks... so tight and warm.

If i may ask... how did you record the drums (are they real drums?)

Also... I'm a sucker for female vocals... the only thing I would play around with (notice I didn't say "change") is bring up the female vocals a little.

Again, I really enjoyed listening to this... its this warm and steady sound is what I'm always after in my recording.

Love the song mate. Top voice and great musicianship and arrangement. Not going to comment on the recording because its good enough. I probly would have led the band in at the start with a snare or something. Seems to hit in a bit like an abrupt edit. Doensn't really matter though. But really, I had to listen to it again, liked it that much more the second time. So I gave it the real test and listened to it 10 or 12 times. Still liked it. Thats what A&R people look for. Something they could put on radio all day.
Now where's those damned A&R people when you need them. Sign this dude up imediately. now.

Man, SUPERB once again... Sign me up for an autographed copy of your CD!!! :)

Chris-Thank you! I will let you know for sure!!

Buck-We're in California, USA!!

minusone-thank you very much! Glad you dig the bass. I had a problem recording the bass, an impedance problem  ( which I didn't discover till after I had done all the bass tracks), so I was thinking I should to do them all over  , but thought I should just try fixing it somehow using EQ and compression, so very glad you like the way the bass sounds!! The drums are real, plus there's a homemade brush loop that goes through pretty much the whole song to try and give it that kind of loopy feel. If you like female vocals, you might want to check out some of the other songs (Despair, All About You), as my girlfriend sings lead on those. I only have RealPlayer versions of those up right now, though. Thanks again for the great feedback!!

Scott-Wow, your post is intense! Thanks very much!! Where are those bloody A&R people?!?

leahkim-hello! Thanks a lot! You are signed up! :D

at the risk of leaping more platitudes your way... i must say that if those bass tracks gave you problems... then your skills as an engineer are rather impressive as well. I am still trying to learn those skills. My skills are to a point where I can identify the problems... even the subtle ones... but as for fixing them... well... not there yet!

I will check out the other cuts today. I downloaded "Buzz" and had my girlfriend take a listen... she was amazed... and then her next question was "when can we start doing stuff that sounds like that... I mean with all the money we spend!"

So... the pressure is on!

Macle,

at 00:21 seconds, is that autotune on the backing vocal?

nice strings! are they keys or real?

nice mix! i think im hearing a tambourine in the chorus, if it is, maybe bring it up a tad.

the cymbals at 02:29 could be brought up a little just to give it a little more energy.

other than that, i thought it was excellent:-) good job!

im curious as to where those strings were from.

Sgt. Pepper sure - but not Paul McCartney

I hear a much bigger, and much more welcome, Lennon on those great vocals, especially when you push.
Holy cow is this good.
Double-tracked vocals? or is it a chorus effect? The effect brings to mind the other Beatles-inspired vocals of the 70's - like Harry Nilson or ELO.
If those strings are samples, you sure can arrange them well.
The piano is very good as well.
I LOVE the arpegiatted guitars - not so much the distorted chords in the choruses.

I'm sorry my comments are on the character of the instruments, but the production sounds so perfect that there's no critiquing to be done.

minusone-thanks for the engineering platitudes! Really, I go totally by the "mess around until it seems good, or until I can't take it anymore" method. It's always sort of a guessing game. As far as the pressure from your girlfriend, uh oh  , I can relate to that!!! Tell her, the more pressure, the worse stuff is gonna sound!!:D

LongWaveStudio-no autotune on those backing vocals!! I've messed around with that, and I've found that autotuning backgrounds seems to make it worse, not necessarily cuz of that autoune "sound", but because it makes them sound less dimensional, I think. The whole point of doubling and stuff is to make it fatter, so I think that slightly out of tune thing is good, right? But I'm not against autotune (some people have a cow!!). I don't really like it, but...:) So anyway, I wonder what it is you're hearing? The strings are from the Gigasampler, some mellotron samples mixed with the DanDean strings mixed with a couple of free samples I found on the net. Thanks very much for checking out the song, and the great comments!

Eric J-Thank you! John Lennon is my absolute favorite, so that's really really cool!!! Yes, the vocals are doubletracked, and the backgrounds are triple tracked. Wow, thank you very much!

Macle

Wow. I think thats my favorite song I've heard on this board yet production wise and I generally HATE synth strings. You make it work though. Not much else to say except that I wish my girlfriend could sing......

hey Macle,

I recon this would be a good song no matter how you do it.
Why dont you do an acoustic / vocal version. It'd sound great. Both your voices belting out to an acoustic (or a piano). It wouldn't take much to do. Go on, I know you want to. Imagine your both on Dave Letterman with an acoustic. That kind of version, and use you way cool Rode mic, it'l sound wicked.

Just AWESOME!!!

Why aren't you signed????

Just an awesome song. Killer recording and mix. Prolly the best combination of songwriting and recording/mixing I have heard from this board.

SO nice to hear a SONG. So nice to hear someone that can SING!!!

Yep, you flat out kicked my ass!!!

keep at it!
