Hi, I'm submitting this song to FOUND magazine as an ode to something they published. They're putting together a complation disc that will be professionally mastered, but since I don't have a clear idea of exactly what mastering will and will not take care of, I wanted the track I submit to be as good as I can make it.

You can hear it either as streaming audio or as a downloadable file. Just click on "The Booty Don't Stop" at

Please let me know what you think of the mix. Thanks!

i dont hear any bass drum and the attack on the guitar strums are quite dominant over the snare. This kinda makes the bass seem on a mission by itself. bass is a little too strong in the 2nd and 3rd verse. The guitar could stand some soft compression during the choruses to keep it in check more. The singing level could come up in the choruses some more. A touch of room verb on the vocals, not enough to hear so much as to just blend the harmonies a little more would be nice.

"Booty" Wow... nice full sound on the guitar... you must have a good set up,
or you know how to get a lot out of your equipment. Very nice balance... the
kick drum sounds esp. delicious here. Great rhythm... beautiful. Good voice.
Hey, this is really really cool :) A taste of "funk" in this type of music is
always yummers. ha ha ha... "The booty don't stop girl"... kinda like Hip-Hop
Folk, or something. Reminds me of that "Dynamite Hack" song... great song.
Drums are very subtle, but not too bad... maybe some more level on the OH's
so the toms and cymbals come out a bit more... haha "Noah and his punk-ass ark"

What type of guit-fiddle you got goin on here? Sounds rich.

One of the best songs I've heard here for a while.... very CD-R burnable.

This is nice

Clear vocals--a little dry but nice. Nice harmony.

I like the musical balance in the instruments. Maybe a little light in the kick drum. Bass solo is nice.

This is very clean sounding.

From the title--this is not what I expected.

Well done

Booty-lisious!

Nice little acoustic track. I like how you took some fairly street savvy lyrics and put it to music that my grandmother would like!

Mix-wise, The drums do sound distant in the mix and the kick seems non existent. Bring up the kick's track if available or raise the bass on what is there on the drum track.

The bass playing was quite good but seemed to be the loudest instrument in the mix next to the vocals. I would bring it down a little so that it doesn't show the inadequacies of the drum kit.

The guitar sounded fine.

Vocals were well performed but could use a little bit of verb. It sounded like you recorded them singing quieter than what you might have been really comfortable singing them like if you could have opened up and let loose a bit. It sounded as well that you were too close to the mic when the main vox was recorded.

Over-all, not a bad recording and sounds like with a bit of tweaking, you can make it even better.

If you are going to get the track professionally mastered, avoid compression when making a two track for the engineer so that he has some room to dynamically adjust and level out the track and leave a few db's of headroom before the 0db mark.

Cheers! :)

Thanks all of you for the feedback. I'm leaving the country on saturday, but I'm going to try and incorporate as many of your suggestions as I can, I'll try to post an updated version before I leave.

Participant, I'm not really sure if I have a good setup or not, which probably means I don't. I used a few 57's and 2 Rode NT's for the vocals, all going into an Aardvark Q10, which then goes into my computer. I'm mixing everything in Cakewalk. The drums I did electronically in FruityLoops, because all of my drum playing friends were out of town for the summer.

Thanks again and if you have any more ideas let me know!

-Peter
