Shur SM 57
PVM 325
AKG C451

first...i have to say...i was foolished by the AKG's guide book...
they list AKG C451 as the top choices for snare....which is not...
beacuse C451 is sensivity condensor mic, which always pick up high hat like crazy!!!

Shur SM 57 is not bad, did not pick up too much "detail" around the snare, BUT....which ends up did not pick up too much detail on snare as well...

PVM 325, haven't try yet...any suggestion?

SO GUYS, what's ur favour ?

DON"T FORGET TO EXPLAIN WHY

all mics can be good : D...as long as u find a way to use it!
SO Don't forget explain why and how

Microphone EQ is important as well

different mic pick up different frequency strongly...
Normal dynamic mic pick up more middle range frequency
and sometimes it may be a disadvantage for people who like the high pitch snare...(but good for people who like 80's snare)
the super low punch also a situation that normal dynamic like Shur 57 can't offer that well

The M201 is a hyper cardioid with a nice off axis response and low output.
This makes it an almost ideal snare mic.

It's very rejective and you can bash it with a drumstick with little problems.

The 57 is a nice snare mic too, but not in the least as rejective as the M201, so if you have a hat basher, you're in deep trouble, because the off axis response of the 57 is far from nice.

The Sennheiser MD441 has the nicest of axis response of all dynamic super and hyper cardioids, a great snare mic too, although a little big.

Sounds Good!

wow,M201 sounds like very cool weapon : D....(automatic rifle system in USA military)
HAHA joking ,
u make me want to buy this mic so bad........ ....i ...will...buy it

The ATM23HE is another nice snare alternative. Like the Audix and Beyer, it has a high rejection hypercardioid pattern.

I go for a beta 57 on the top and bottom, sometimes a C451 on top and beta 57 on bottom. If your picking up too much hi-hat get the drummer to raise them up higher away from the snare...so many drummers play with them too close to the snare!

I prefer to let a drummer do his thing like he's used to. So changing his setup is out of the question.

Some unexperienced drummers will follow your advice without any problem, but really good drummers won't.

Sometimes I ask the drummer to hit the snare harder.

The M201 is a great snare mic, period.
