Ok, I finally got a decent permanent setup and recorded a song with multiple tracks and although it is far from perfect, as a newbie I was proud enough to share it. So I was wondering (apart from the mediocre to bad singing and guitar playing) what I could do to make it better.

I used a Gibson Nighthawk and recorded directly into a Lexicon Omega USB interface and then also recorded organ. The mic I used was a shitty MXL 990 and the software I used was garageband.

Any crits, comments, advice on how to improve it would really be welcome.

Oh and the song is a cover of That Was the Worst Christmas Ever! by Sufjan Stevens.

You can listen to it here....(That Was The Worst Christmas Ever)

or download from mediafire here...

Remember I am really new to this so if I am doing something totally wrong and you don't want to explain at least point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Andrew

I would hardly call the MXL 990 shitty, though it's not amazing. It's the mic i started with, and while it has its own sound and a bit of a limited use, it can be great for some things. I kind of like it on hihats, or as a mono drum overhead, and on some people's voices.

Nice stuff, sounds better than my early recordings by a longshot, i had no clue whatsoever what i was doing. The vocals come up and it sounds as if you need to project your voice more, but aside from that, better mics in proper positions could probably do you well. The other guys who have more experience than i do will most likely be happy to chime in and point out things that I didn't notice.

Yeah, the 990 works for me as a beginner but sometimes mine does weird things. Thanks for your tips. I had a cold that day so that affected the vocals some. What do you mean by better mics in proper positions? Just putting them where they make an instrument or vocals sound the best?

well, nothing really sounds "bad" but if you had a better vocal mic, it might help, or a pair of nice SDC's on the guitar. But yeah you pretty much got what i meant.

What are SDCs?

Small Diaphragm Condensers. Also called Pencil Condensers for their shape. Often sold and used in pairs for stereo recording of instruments, like acoustic guitars, pianos, drum overheads, etc...

You deserve a medal for your patience.

Nah...once upon a time I didn't know what an SDC was either. What goes around comes around. Next time he sees that question, he'll be able to give the answer I just gave. :D

Oh yeah. I know exactly what you are talking about. I don't know why I didn't know the name.

Thanks!
