so yesterday i went to record my frined's band and I got decent tracks except for the bass, (which for some reason i always fuck up.) I used a ATM 25 a few inches away from the bass cabinet, and ran that through my yammy mg 2/10 into my MR-8. It sounds like its clipping and its all distorted and nasty and stuff, but it definatly wasnt clipping, and to tell the truth i dont really remember it sounding bad till i moved the stuff from the mr-8 to the pc. I suppose i should try and put up a mp-3 of it, but anyone have any idea on what i mighta done wrong?

Yes, you didn't record the bass direct or through a modeler.

Forget using a microphone on bass cabs.

Especially in untreated rooms. Basically you are recording noise and standing waves.

And effectively treating normal rooms for bass is incredibly difficult and expensive. In the world of pro recording this assumes a purpose-designed building with splayed surfaces and soforth.

Even then, historically bass is recorded direct far more often than not (and by direct, I mean a line connection through whatever devices are used, but not an acoustic recording by microphone), because it's still a hassle to use a microphone on a bass cab even under the best of circumstances.
