That demo sound..

I am very curious how to get that demo sound, the one most bands have, well, the ones in the 80s. I am mostly using digital equipment no, VERY low budget equipment (AKG C1000S, Line6 toneport, Encore guitar, simple cheap starter drumkit, ibanez and BC Rich basses are only decent equipment I have). And I just love the sound of those very old demos maybe even the analogness of the tracks going back as far as the 50s or 60s, there's just something that I love about it. Don't tell me to get new equipment, though I am very satisfied with what I have at the moment, even though I am asking for a sound.

I guess my main problem is my music sounding very digital, and I am just starting out, so using quite cheap, but decent sounding equipment, thanks for your help. And yes, I am new here

You always go for the best sound you can get
You don't set out to make something sub-par because its a "demo".
You may be looking for a live same room recording with the vocals done in an iso booth??? You could be wanting anolog as suggested.
It's hard to say what it is that you see as that demo sound.

Try recording it, dubbing it off to a bunch of pre-used cassettes then run that back into your computer and burn it on CD.

Yeah, I dunno if this can be achieved with a Line 6 Toneport, though. There's just something I very dislike about the sound of digital things, I really can't tell what it is, though.

Well if you're recording direct you are really limited to what the tone port offers. There's just alot of stuff you don't ge to play with. Like the sound of the room and what happens between the instrument and the microphone (air).
You can try to emulate it. You may want to try messing with a master buss reverb to try and put all of the tracks into the same space. I don't know if that will get you close to what you want or not. It will depend on the quality of the reverb too.

I have a little site with one good reverb on it it's SIR reverb. Give it a shot.

Go to the vst page. If you look around the net I hear you can get and load different reverb sounds into it as well.
I should also mention that if you are going to try the master reverb route, try to go as slim as you can on the reverb you are using on the individual tracks.

if you realy want to imerse yourself in the 80s the you need to get hold of a 4 track cassete recorder and embrace what it was to be a true indi ..john peel wanabee!!!!


these days i almost piss myself listening to mp3 stuff that has pristine digital backup to what is basically the same old stuff...but thats the way it is today....live and let live....

What your likely looking for is a tape saturation simulator. I have tried a few in the past and never liked them my self. You will have to do a search for a free one. Maybe someone will chime in with one that they like.
Be a bit carefull with what you download. Try to find a place that rates thier plugins. There's alot of crap out there. I usually set a restore point before I install free plugs. I haven't had a ton of problems, but better safe than sorry.

Well I've just tested my microphones, obviously they will no where near be as good as any of your recordings, since I assume all you use things like Neumann U87s and mics along those lines, and I've read a lot of bad things about the AKG C1000S on here (though I am VERY satisfied with the sound, especially for the price).

I recorded the crappy guitar through this crappy 15 watt peavey amp and I was wondering if I could get some of your opinions on it, ignore the video.

Ha, I don't have anything near as good as a U87. I wish Right now am moving my studio so I don't have any monitors set up. I will take a listen, but it will be on cheapy headphones so I can't tell much.

Ya the C1000S gets a bit of a bad rap around here but by the same token some pretty some people love it on guitar. Larry Crane (I think it was) called it his secret weapon.

Well, it's not really a song, since all I'm doing is playing a Bb powerchord a couple of times recorded in 3 different ways, might that be a bit of a waste posting it in the mp3 clinic?
