i've been working on some experimental music lately and i remember using a macintosh several years ago that had a program where you'd type, and the computer would read back the text to you in any number of preset synthesized voices you chose...male/female/robot etc.

anyone know where i can find programs like this? i'd just like to get an idea of what's out there. thanks

ReadPlease uses the MS Text-To-Speech engine, which is a programmable COM object, so if you know a little visual Basic, then you can write your own app pretty easily to output the sound whereever you want.

There's a very good one set up on the web that you can use to create WAV or AIFF or AU files that you can download

http://www.bell-labs.com/project/tts/voices.html

It's prohibitive to buy unless you have a business need for it but if you only need to render a few lines and the 8 different voice types are not too limiting, it's nice to be able to do it for free.

I also got some shareware thing at home that's not too horrible but nowhere near as good as this Bell Labs thing.
