Alright Dudes, I don't post in here very often - but I just want to get the levels on this right before I hand it over to the drummer to make a proper job on it rather than my rubbish.

Weird, sounds totally different on phone to computer and iPad.

You worked to get that guitar tone, and it does sound good. But I think you've overdone it on the guitar levels. I'd bring them down so that you can feel the connection between the guitars and the bass. I'm not hearing too much bass generally.

Talk about dynamics! A bit too much in the transition between clean and crunch.
As others have said bass is weak.

I like the guitar arrangements alot. I just think levels need to be brought under control.

after reading the previous comments, I had the volume up trying to zero in on the bass and the crunch guitar scared the shit out of me!:laughings: The bass needs to come up, crunch down and the snare is buried, like the guitar tone though. :D

Yeah if the drummer is going to play along to this through headphones he'll have to crank it just to hear the 1st minute, then the rest of it will blow his head apart. You need to even out the dynamics to allow the drummer to do his thing, then restore them when you do the mix

Cheers guys, not too concerned about the snare 'cos it's gonna be replaced by someone who can actually drum. Saying that, how do I "un-bury" a snare?

I'll drop the crunch guitars back a notch, bring up the bass and maybe the verse guitars slightly.

This'll probably make the solo stand out a little more too. I think this might be the first time I've recorded a solo using a micd amp rather than a sim.

I agree about the levels.

I like the crunch guitar sound. It was really good. Clean guitar sound was good too.

Cymbals are nice and clear.

Needs a bass.

I think I can hear a fader ride on the lead guitar at about 2:42.

Overall very good. minus the volume jolts :)

Fader ride?

Cheers, I will sort the levels out after the weekend. I'm hoping a mate of mine will email me a bassline this weekend too. I'm in the airport now.

Yeah, I agree with all of this. The volume changes kept catching me out, but hope you keep posting the developments.

Instead of trying to get a mix that you think will work for your drummer, consider sending him stereo stems set up in such a way that he can set the levels the way he wants them.

01 - Clean Guitars
02 - Heavy Guitars
03 - Bass
04 - Guide Drums

...and so on.

As another option:

My writing partner and I live in different countries. We both use REAPER and when it is time for the other to add a part to a song they haven't worked on yet, whoever is sending creates a consolidated project for the receiver so all the markers, timelines and what-have-you are all there. From then on, only stems need to be sent because both have a complete project.

We have done 8 or 9 songs this way. It works really well.

Either way, you give the other musician the option to set the levels the way he wants to set them. Maybe I misunderstood and you already are doing this sort of thing, but figured I would throw this out there in case it is helpful.

The verse is much quieter than the chorus, evening those out might be nice for your drummer while he's tracking. Even if you don't want them to be even in the final mix.
