You turn the knobs - either clockwise or counter-clockwise - until it sounds good.... there, did that help you?

Idiot...

Some one needs to throw a "Fuckwit" into this thread somewhere. It's just not a good thread without a fuckwit.

blue bear, the only thing i've heard from you was nothing much really, you were no help to me anyways, why dont u show me how to adjust the knobs of my preamp and compressor then i'll give u props, until then stop with them messages thinking u an engineer, u a engi-queer.

Engi-queer...hey that's pretty clever. Of course you just wasted it on one of the most respected pro engineers to grace this forum with his considerable knowledge. Now just take some of that cleverness and apply it to to your endeavour. You're really gonna need to figure it out now, cause I expect everyone's gonna be done trying to help you. I know I am.
Oh, one last piece of advice.......with your attitude you've got more obsticles on your path to stardom than just sounding good.

IF THERE WAS A CORRECT "SETTING" FOR EVERYTHING IT WOULD NOT HAVE ANY FUCKING KNOBS ON IT, JUST A FUCKING "ON" BUTTON!

sorry for yelling....fuckwit

Let me give you some unsolicited, but hopefully helpful, advice, realestninja.
1. Compressors, like all gear, can usually do lots of different things depending on how you set them up and what you pass through them. It really is ultimately up to you how you want something to sound. If you gave me 10 vocal tracks, I could probably compress them 10 different ways that would ultimately sound "right" but also different. I don't listen to a lot of rap, but I'd imagine that as long as everything sounds up front and you don't hear a lot of compression going, you're probably ok. Good rule of thumb: compress until you start hearing something you don't like. Fast attack times, medium release times. Have at it. Maybe you'll find a technique you like that others haven't really hit upon yet...who knows.
2. You have no idea who might be helpful to you on a board like this, but slinging homophobic and other terms like you are will put you on the fast track to getting ignored and/or ripped a new one every time you post. I'm not sure how old you are or how long you've been into recording, but boards like this usually have a handful of very helpful people who have been doing this stuff for decades and who appreciate their due respect. If you've got anger issues, are homophobic, or maybe even in the closet and fighting it, take that shit out elsewhere.
3. Recording can be really fun when you experiment with the gear you have. There's nothing better, to me, than to find a great use from a neglected piece of gear no one else would bother with.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

So is this why I can't program presents into my preamps?

There's something not good on that sound, turn yer knobs until it sounds better.

Tell us what gear you've used.

Hey realistsamurai or whatever instead of bashing one of the more respected pro's on this and other forums why don't you check out his studio. Click on the little blue bear link and be amazed. I live in fairly huge city with many recording facilities. I've personally visited most of the best ones and I can tell you ONE studio in St.Louis compares to Bears, its called Four Seasons and the only way you can record there is if you're signed to a major label. So stop assuming bear doesn't know anything. There are few people I've ever talked to that knows more. Yes he can be hard headed and tough to get an answer out of but he didn't bust his ass to get where he is to teach dumbass kids how to be rap producers. Respect and you'll get help, if there was a fucking setting for your compressor that was "right" or "correct" you'd have gotten it out of someone by now. When people say there is no right setting they aren't screwing around with you, there really isn't. In fact I recorded a singer last night and she did three songs and on all three songs I had different settings on her compressor and eq.

Oh, and he does use a pop filter, you faggot, he's going to take a picture of it too because you kids are pissing him off, telling him fake stuff. If you don't know what you're talking about black person sit down.

He does an ok job, I guess.

Nik, I'm not pissing the guy off. I'd never be so cruel and you know that!

The best advice I can give him is to turn everything to ten.

Serious, that vocal doesn't sound good, he'd better mult it to a couple of other tracks and use some light and some heavy compression together with the uncompressed track.

Can you follow me? I'm damn sure Bruce can (Blue Bear).

Han - we have a communication mistake!! My first post is his actual signal chain - my second is a quote of what he said to me when I said the sibilance in his vocal may be due to lack / poor use of a good pop filter. Obviously his converters and pre won't help that, but he has a good mic and not a good result from it.

Sorry for any confusion, I get your compression tip and think it's probably a very good one.

Hey, if I fancy some sort of weekend break, how do you fancy giving me a crash-course internship sometime? :)

Did anyone listen to the "final test" he made? I did for kicks.

Your attitude can play a big part in how far you'll go in life. Remember that realestninja.
