Tell if this is OK

This is a tune I recorded over 2 nights in a loud rehearsal warehouse. The basic tracks (rhythm, drums, guitars) were recorded to ADAT and the rest was recorded directly into Cubase (have recently switched to Logic).

The mix was in Cubase with a MotorMix controller and Event 20/20 monitors.

The mastering was done in Sound Forge by using the Wave Hammer "Master for 16 bit" and then normalized to -16 db RMS.

I can tell you I don't like the mic I ended up using for the vocals so I used the Acoustic Moddle of a nice valve to help it a little.

Anyway, let me know what you think. The tune is Honkytonk Woman and the band was assembled by the guitar player for the project and isn't a band that is playing anywhere.

the forum for posting songs for critique is the mp3 mixing clinic.

A very inviting mix. Not harsh, not dull. All it needs are little tweaks. I think you are already 90 % of the way home.

The tweaks are like making the sax a little brighter etc. The kick sounds kind of wierd alone, but it fits in the mix, so a little tweaking there to, maybe a little more room sound .

Yeah the kick at the beginning has a little trouble. The problem is that the drummer was totally not ready for the experience. He had never done a "session" before and we didn't have a click track for timing references.

The guitar player suggested in retrospect that we should have gotten the drummer a little drunk, given him a few hours to warm up and then tried recording.

I think the vocals get lost toward the end.

I originally had a nice room tone that I added with an accustic modeler, but it messed up the stereo image in ways I can't describe so I took it off. There is a bit if BBE sonic maximizer on the master track that helps the whole mix a little.

I would have gave him the CD in his headphones, let him play along, everyone else follow him.....drummers are basicallystupid by nature, so adding alcohol only worsens it......

The headphone situation was really bad the first night. The second night I brought a dedicated headphone amp & 6 pairs of phones. Every gig I learn about yet another hole in my "preparedness".
