Just bought me a new Fender Standard Telecaster (brown sunburst color), this month, and was wondering if going to a 4-way selector switch would be a worth while upgrade? Not sure if I'll upgrade the pickups right away, but I'll be going with a Fender Custom Shop Hot Rod (flames) bridge and control plate as soon as possible. Already got a Levy's strap that resembles a car seat belt, so I'm a bit closer to the hot rodding look. Maybe I should consider a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Hot Rod DeVille, in the coming future, to round out the hot rodness that I'll be putting into my Tele?

That's a pretty popular mod. You mgiht want to do a search over at www.tdpri.com, it's been the topic of several discussions.

Please post a pic when you get it done. It sounds cool.

Another place to look is telemodders.com. They have a discussion board and profiles of hot-rodded teles.

Went there, joined the discussions...should have a fun time with it. Thanks akaMrC! :)

OK, so help out an ignorant old-timer here. If a standard tele has 2 pickups, the 3 way selector chooses the bridge pup, the neck pup, or both. What does the 4th position do?-Richie

That's what I was wondering. I need to get out more.

I have heard of 3 and 5 position switches, but I didn't even know anyone made a 4 position switch.

IMO a good one is the neck pickup with a huge treble roll off.

On a standard Tele you have three possitions, neck pickup, both pickups in parallel, and bridge pickup. The four possition switch adds both pickups in series.

OK Light, so far, I'm with you. What's the practical effect of that?-Richie

So, on a standard tele, what is the middle position, series or parallel? What about the 2nd and 4th positions on a strat?

The in between possition on the standard Fender wirings (Strat and Tele) are all series. Parallel sounds a bit fuller, but the only way to really get it is to listen. Go and try the Strats with the S-1 switches, and you can hear both.
