Tele Pups

Well, I took delivery of the repro blue floral telecaster I bought off e-bay for my daughter and it's in mint condition as promised (always a pleasant surprise). Plays decently enough, but could use some tweaking. I have it in to my friendly neighborhood luthier who will set it up properly for me, change the cap so the tone control actually works, and change the jack to something hardier than the OEM jack which, I'm told, is subject to breaking.

I'm also looking at changing out the pups to something a bit less strident. The stock pups are OK, but a bit bright for my taste (I know, I know, telecasters are supposed to be bright, but IMHO, this is a bit much). I'm currently looking at a couple SD model pups: the Antiquity model as well as the Five Two model.

Anybody got any opinions on these models or any other suggestions? I'm not looking for real hot modern pickups, rather something that is fairly balanced and sounds more like an old tele.

The Guitarfetish Tele pickups are great, a highlight of his bang-for-buck stuff, IMO. I'd think you'd like the set that came in the XV820 I bought, or maybe the Fatbodies (with which I replaced the stock Duncans in my Lite Ash Tele) if you want a little more output and mids than a vintage set. The 50's RI are quite good, but very vintage-Tele bright, so you'd probably pass there.

Interesting. Thanks guys!

Fralin seems to have a half and half pup like the SD Five Two.

Decisions, decisions. I hope the kid notices the difference after all this.:D

Might get flamed for this, but if you are willing to try the Epiphone OBL singles I have, and willing to pay all shipping cost, we can trade yours for mine. If you don't like 'em, just pay shipping again, and we can trade back. You should know, all three are strat-type pups, and center is reverse wound. Dunno if you can use them, but if you can and want to try 'em out, lemme know.

Except he's not looking for those, and they wouldn't fit his guitar.

That's EXACTLY why I mentioned that, wiseguy- because they are not a drop-in fit. AND, if he were to PM me, I would re-iterate that point, just to be sure he knew.

Yup, to reiterate,I'm looking for tele pickups that sound like vintage tele pickups - not hot modern pickups - or strat pickups for that matter, although I do thank everyone for their suggestions. :D

Picking a guitar and pickups is always a compromise, as I well know since the last song I heard my daughter learning was Cheap Trick''s Surrender, which I wouldn't necessarily pick out as a tele song.
