Hi,
I just received my fender telecaster that I bought on e-bay. It's only a mexican made one. I wanted to buy the American hot rodded fat telecaster; but as I need to buy drum and bass stuffas well I had to settle for this.

I have bought also a standard telecaster bridge pick-up to replace the mexican one and also have the option of buying the DH-1 humbucker.

So the question. How close can I get to the hot rodded fat with this cheap piece of wood? I'll replace the bridge pick-up no problem but I would also like to add a 5 way selector and a humbucker of some sort to the neck position (maybe the DH-1; I have heard good and bad things about this pick-up, any thoughts on this?).

How feasable would it be fitting the humbucker and the 5 way pick-up selector? Any other ideas for modification?

I can get the parts, it's just I've never modified any guitar where I've had to drill/take tools to it. I've only replaced things like nuts, pick-ups etc i.e. straight swaps.

BTW, H2H; haven't you got the hot rodded fat tele? For some reason I can seem to remember you mentioning it before.

Cheers,
Krystof.

Yep, thats it.

I don't think you'll have a problem putting in the humbucker and 5 way switch. If you need, I can open mine up and give you a home-made wiring diagram so that you can copy my wiring. I personally think you'll get pretty darn close to the sound of the real thing. It's my opinion that wood on a Tele doesn't make as near big of a difference as pickups and their placement. I think the tone really comes from one pickup mounted to the bridge and the other to a plastic pickguard.

One thing...I would look at different pickups. Get one that is right for your sound. I think my HB is a little muddy for the music I generally like to play. Just get one that is hot enough to match the bridge on that Tele.

Cheers H2H (again). Good to hear is shouldn't present too much hassle. My priority is the bridge (ie the tele sound).

I'm going to buy a 5 way selector in the next week and then be on the look out for a humbucker (I think I'll forget about the DH-1). When I get it I may contact you but hopefully it'll be fine doing it myself unaided.

Talk about hod rodding a tele, i've got a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail (twin blade humbucker in single coil size) in the bridge of my tele and man, its sure hard to find one high output neck p/u to match what the Hot Rail is dishing out. I'll be throwing them out for single coiled Bill Lawrence's soon. I think its not necessary to have h/b pickups if you are not playing very heavy rock/metal.

I know what you mean about the hot rails; I've been looking into it myself and may well go for one; should be hassle free to switch.
