Hi all, long time no post. I don’t get much web-time these days unfortunately, hope this finds everybody well. Heres my problem:
I was running out of disk space for recording projects, so I started planning a tidy up operation.. After some thought I decided to rebuild my machine. I had a dual boot setup with 98 and Win2000, and hardly ever used 2000. CD burning applications were refusing to work, so backing up was a problem. Then I managed to get my hands on an old SCSI 4GB disk with a SCSI card, from an old Pentium Pro. This gave me the space I needed to do a bit of rearranging. Most of the space was taken up with 32-bit WAV files, many not needed, so I reclaimed about 12-15GB fairly quickly, and started rebuilding my system disk.
What’s different in the new setup:
The SCSI Card and Disk
Iomega ZIP 650 CD-Writer
Iomegaware software
Windows 98 SE instead of the previous Windows 98 Plus (and 2000)
New Delta 44 98 driver from the M-Audio site.
Don’t have the drivers for the onboard soundcard
Different Virus Checker
What’s the same:
Cool.ini is there from the previous setup NOTE: Even with my dual-boot CEPro was only installed under 98 Plus.
Cool Edits Temp directories are on my two old IDE disks
Symptoms:
So far ? (All intermittent) Crashes, weird (very LOUD) crackles when recording and monitoring with CEP, just about everything CEP does is about 3 times slower than before, lots of skips, hanging, general frustration. I must stress that this is intermittant, but some of the noises are are ending up on the track that’s recording.
Questions:
1: Is the mere presence of that SCSI disk possibly the cause of some of this ?
2: Maybe it’s M-Audios new driver, anybody got any experience with that ?
3: Is taking a cool.ini file from a 98 Plus setup (plus w2k dual-boot) a bad idea ?
More Information (if needed):
DMA is not enabled.
RAM : Thought I had two 128s but the system tells me 192 or something, and not 256.
Pentium 111 833 or 733 (not sure)
3 hard disks: System 10GB, Audio 20GB, new backup SCSI disk 4GB
Anti-virus is always shut down when attempting audio work.
Maybe there is something here that would jump out at someone with the relevant knowledge and\or experience, heres hoping...
