Would this setup work?

If i used the direct outs on the 312 to plug into the Teac, would I be able to record each track simultaneosly? I havent gotten a good look at either of these machines, so does anybody know if the connections match the same size?

Also, would it be better to spring for a tascam 512 to use instead?

thank you very much

M

The direct out connectors on the M312 are 1/4" jacks and the back of the 38 reel to reel are RCA/phono connectors so you would need to get an 8 channel snake that had the appropriate jacks on each end.

Signal wise, they are compatible, both being unbalanced signals.

The 500 series as mentioned previously in another thread would also be more compatible being a natural 8 buss mixer but they are harder to find used then the 300 series.

Cheers! :)

Hosa makes the cable you are looking for. You would need two of them and they sell for about 35.00 each.

I run my 320 and 38 just that way

with good results, yes, all the channels you want can record simultaneously.

As mentioned, the 512/520 are updates, providing 8 busses, which would make life a little easier, but not needed.... the 312 / 320 class machines are pretty darn good by themselves.

I go direct out from the board to the 38, record straight, then add effects on the trip back - on the 320 (20 channels) i have 1 - 8 set up as direct out to the 38, then 1 - 8 on the deck return to the board on 11 - 18, and I can then insert effects on any given channel, rout to the stereo buss, and drop a mix onto either a 2 track tape deck, or a Fostex digital machine, or straight to a stand-alone CD burner.... usually to digital, then adding any further compression and reverb on the trip to the CD burner.

If you have the manual, you will find all kinds of info on signal routing in there.

all the best
