Teac 3340s play problems

Hey everyone I have a problem with my teac 3340s reel machine. It powers up fine and until now was recording beautifully. I was experiencing and intermittent problem where i would turn on the machine and it wouldn't Play RWD or FF but i could switch off the machine, turn it back on and it would work fine. It seems this problem is no longer intermittent. The capstan spins but when i press play or any other functions nothing happens. I live in Australia and its very hard to find a technician that has any idea about these machines so any advice would be ace!
