My tuxedo attack cat TCP occasionally ruins what I'm recording on my MIDI keyboard by leaping onto the keys at an inopportune moment. Yesterday she made up for this by leaping onto the keys at the right moment and on the right keys. I've made this into a
short 1525 KB stereo 256Kbps .mp3 file.

Those guys. I uploaded it, downloaded it, waited about 12 hours and tried again, (no problem) tried once more on a modem line at work. Again, no problem. I just tried it one more time after I read your post and BAM, the problem you mentioned.
I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the info.

Genius, as always...
Do you overdub these pieces or play them all at once??? I am ignorant of such things.

S8-N: I'm blushing hard....
And there were two distinct edits made by my cat, both of which were left intact.
Sure she got free flying lessons after each edit, but she loves that..... :)
And BTW: any percussion ideas for this ditty?

As to the compositional methodology, I used your technique of putting down a bass line first. But my cat TCP wouldn't sit still for that without throwing in her two cents. This time they proved to be a positive influence.
After that I slow the bass line down in CW to half speed and record a lead track. Don't ask me how; I can't actually play the keyboard. Sort of like channelling or speaking in tongues without all the bullshit explanations. Then I use the staff view and my Wacom graphics tablet pen to correct anything I don't like on what I've already laid down. I didn't spend too much time in this phase on this piece. Then a quick pan and volume adjust on each track. Oh, and I doubled a couple of tracks in the second half of the piece. I find leaving the bass in the mix where it is allows for a very loud presentation on regular stereo speakers without any noticeable distortion.

After reading S8-N's post about this one, I feel kind of silly for asking basically the same question on that older mp3! I groove to this stuff, you know what I'm saying? Please tell me you're actually sweating somewhat over these songs as opposed to ingeniuously throwing together tossed-off pieces of feline enhanced gems. I have an old bluesy trip song with my cat sounding off during the pause.
It gets kind of sentimental doesn't it?
Damn, my wife's right. I am a geek.
Thanks for another fine addition! This is better than MTV man! (chuckle here)

Meow. I could hear this continuing. Add percussion gradually bring in a backround synth wash. I get the feeling you have fun with your music Doc. Thats a good feeling.

CH: I try not to sweat the creation of this stuff. But I did see "Weird Science" and while these pieces are spontaneous, "tossed off" has another connotation... :)
When I find myself too involved with any particular piece without any definite plan as to where I'm going I move on. But I'll spend ridiculous levels of effort if I see a reason to do so. I once spent 6 months doing a drawing in 4 colors of ball point pen that was only 8" x 5.5".
Layth: With only 47 seconds, how gradually can I add this percussion? Your ideas are welcome.
Most amazing animal music interaction I've ever experienced was playing 12 bar blues in a muffler shop through my 60W acoustic and having the resident Banty rooster, "Little Stevens" actually crowing some awesome lead licks along with the music. That's right- A friggin' one pound chicken! Better than a lot of blues harp players I've heard.
I'm not making this up!

Hope cat is clever enough to retain lawyer to protect co-copyright with evil genius midi-composer....gibs

Doc, I meant make the composition longer continuing with those themes you started with. You're pretty good at that.

Layth: Thanks for the suggestions. The updates (same 256Kbps stereo .mp3 quality and a quickie .rm version under 200KB) have been posted at juston.com
This is my first attempt at a synth wash.
Now how do I dry off the Canvas?
And I hope the drums weren't too Phil Collins for you. This Canvas has some nice Toms. I can easily get carried away.
Gibs: TCP's got it covered. Her brother, (also born on my floor under the computer desk) Cryo (short for cryogenic) lives with my sister the attorney.

re: meow mix

That is some nice work. This song meanders from beginning to end with no formula, and I really like that quality in a song. Though, it didn't kick in full effect until you added the beats. Also, I like that synth patch that sounds like birds whistling in the background towards the beginning.

Christmas dinners over all the relatives have left, the familes asleep. My gift to myself is to come to this BBS and enjoy the humor, give some advise if I can and share my thoughts about music.

Doc, I smiled all the way through TCP's inspiration. It works great! I like the way it builds the way it changes and the DRUMS!

Now I think I'll head over to the cave to see
what the hullabaloo is.

DMC: The patch is called synth goblins! Part of the synth wash I was trying to apply...

Layth: The drum build was accomplished with a single command in CW called velocity scale. I applied it at natural boundaries in the piece so it built up twice in response to the two variations on a theme. I did a wipe of a few measures in the second iteration to let the second part get started undisturbed. Thanks again for the suggestions. TCP sez "meow".

sorry doc can't d/l

The whole site at Juston is down right now.
Try again later, and have a happy new year!

So that's what cats like to listen to.

Bizzare man. You come up with some of the strangest stuff. It's always a pleasure to listen!
