I do get to work on more Martins than Taylors. Why that is may be something worth examining....??

That one is easy to answer. Martin has been making guitars since 1833. Taylor hasn't. There's no competition on that one.

They are both excellent companies, by the way, who go FAR beyond what any rational company would in terms of after purchase customer service. The absolute Gold Standard for warranty service, both of them.

True but I'm not talking about the older ones!! I do think Taylor have engineered a lot of possible problems out of their build and setup process. Not all of it good sometimes. Their fancy neck set arrangement for example..

Outlaws, are you still going with this!!!??? Look - having been a guitarist for 24 years or so, I find it intriguing that Martins have such a rep for being the ultimate acoustic, considering I have tried them whenever I can, which to be literal, is probably half a dozen times a year, at various guitar stores. I've found them to feel stiff, with higher action than I like, and with a sound that TO ME is very flat, bassy, and "dull", for lack of a better word. What you call bashing is my observation, based on two things:

1) my personal preference, technique, etc.
2) the number Martins I've played, which as I've stated

Now, I can put the moves on most guitars, regardless of whether or not they have high or low action, and that is due to a lot practicing. That isn't to say I think I'm a great player, because I am highly critical of myself as a musician. It says I am a capable player, and that my finger strength is well developed. (I hate it when I feel the need to explain everthing down to the minutia to avoid misinterpretation, but I think you might need it that way)

I prefer not to have to push hard on the strings, which I seem to have to do on a Martin, ALWAYS.

What got me to be defensive, Outlaws, is that your original response to this thread had assumptions in it that were unfounded and condescending. You say that I only like Taylors because I prefer electrics? How the F*** would you know what I prefer? I spent almost 6 years with nothing but an acoustic, learning chords, slides and finger style. And it was a relatively cheap POS Epiphone! I play a lot with my fingers, and the tone and playability of a Taylor allows me to be more expressive and I like the sound of it better.

After all these years, the legendary sound and feel of Martins eludes me. The thread was started because I wanted to read about the experience/opinions of others, NOT so that those like you who clearly like Martins to jump on the defensive and talk to me like I'm a troll, or whatever you've convinced yourself I am...

I've quit jobs and gotten in the faces of anyone ever that thought they could talk to me that way, because there is no reason you should. You don't know me other than the few things I've written here, so why assume you do? Is it because you feel you are somehow smarter than me or better than me? All I know, is that when I am talked down to, it makes me want to defend myself and lash out at whoever is doing it. If that is what you are here to inspire me to do, then go ahead.

Maybe, Outlaws, it is that attitude of yours that has earned you less rep than me even tho you've posted about a hundred times more. Not that it really matters. Just an observation.

And to who ever gave me negative rep because I have an opinion. My Taylor has been matched up to your other less publicized brands, I went out of my way to play guitars that places like Guitar Center or anything like that wouldn't carry, and my Taylor outplayed them all. Don't just assume I bought the guitar because of the name. If I bought my gear by name, my guitar line up wouldn't include a hand built guitar, an 80's Peavey Milestone, and a no name electric guitar from a yard sale. So, maybe you're wrong about that I "obviously need to play more guitars". How about signing your name, too?

I've only played one Martin; one Taylor. Found out it's ALL how you strum and attack the strings. That's all that counts.Never recorded either one. A guitar is only as good as you play it. Same for any instrument. Personally I prefer my Fender 12 string, 9 volt preamp over any guitar. It's all in the brain and hands and the ability to play by ear. Make more money that way! Cheers, Dave :D :D

I play a Taylor 815 with Martin strings on it. Does that make me a diplomatic person?

I would really like to get into some of these fist fights here, but I just don't give a sh*t what anyone else thinks. I like my Taylor and that's that. If you like your Martin, I think that's cool. If anyone wants to depend on the opnions expressed here, and won't go down and play all the guitars, to make up their own mind, then I think they're an idiot.

Agreed.

Holy cow. How is it that threads like this can actually exist? Both are excellent instruments. A Taylor is a qualitatively different guitar than a Martin; it feels different and can sound very different. ?Better? That's like asking which ripple in the water is better. Each manufacturer produces an excellent factory guitar. Each retains the ability to hand build to the highest quality and in fact does exactly that every year. Each is very serious about its quality control. And as far as I can see, each makes better guitars than it did the year before. Just what do we want from a manufacturer, anyway? Blood? As for Ford v. Chevy thing, get over it! Neither Ford nor Chevy ever made anything this fine.

Martins sucks, Gibsons suck, Taylors suck. Fender is another brand you should stay away from.

Yeah. And all those other brands, too. :D
