Tascam Us-144 Mkll, no sound on left mic input

Hi there, Iv just recently purchased the above named product after the tascam us 122 would not work with my system. I can record and hear into cubase,(the software that came with this product) using the right hand mic input but the left does not seem to be able to record any sound at all. The left dial for the line input and mic input is all the way over to mic, so that should not be an issue. Phantom is on. Please can you advise, as if this product is faulty i need to send it back to where i purchased it from soon. many thanks, Kat x
