I am having trouble deciding between these two. I am a home player/recorder. I wouldn't need anymore than two tracks recorded at a time.

I also noticed the 122 has phantom power but I am unsure if the 224 does or not. What are the advantages of having phantom power?

Also, if I get a 122 it doesn't have any level sliders so I'm assuming that you do all your mixing and mastering on the pc correct?

Sorry, if the ???'s seem dumb. I'm a total newb at pc recording.

The Phatom power is used to power mics like condensers, etc.
Most dynamic mics will not need phantom. ie sm27.

So you can use say, a SM57 to record thru the 122 to your pc and then do a final mixdown of all your tracks with your pc software?

I'm leaning heavily towards the 122 at the moment and wanna be sure it will work out ok for me.

Yup, you can use an sm57 or you can go direct if you're using a POD or an effects unit.. My first try I just played my guitar through my Boss VF-1 multi effects direct... one rhythm track, one lead and a drum machine track, into Cool Edit Pro..
For not knowing what I was doing, and being new to PC recording, or any recording for that matter it sounded pretty good, cept for my impromptu sloppy playing....

Tube, be sure to visit Tascam's user forums at www.tascam.com
to check on consumer satisfaction (or lack thereof) on both these
products.

Hey, thanks alot man. I'm going there now.

Also, I have been considering an M-Audio Quatro. Can anyone tell me about this product?

Damn, the Tascam forums are down right now. Shoot. I'll have to check em again tommorrow.

122: phantom power, but no tactile mixer.

224: no phantom power, but it has sliders for MMC control.

I own the us-428. i use it to record outside the normal studio setting, and i use it as my mix deck. it's great. since it doesn't have phantom power, i use an FMRAudio RNP as a mic-pre. i'm moving in with mom for 4 months until my new house is done, so i'll be using the us-428 quite exclusively until january.
