Tascam US-122 and midi

Hi, I'm kinda new to midi recording and have been having an issue with getting anything midi to play through the monitor i have connected to the us-122. now i know that midi is not audio, but i just want to know how im supposed to connect everything so that i can hear it after running it through a computer synth. ive got an oxygen 8 with a midi out into the midi in on the us-122 going into the computer. is all i have to do run another out from the computer into the us-122 back into the monitor, or is it something else? thank you for anyone that can help, and pardon my ignorance!
 
I have both an Oxygen 8 and a US-122, and I usually hook my Oxygen 8 up thru one of my USB ports.

The US-122 has audio outs on the back panel next to the midi in and out and that's where you should be hooking up your speakers.

It's funny that I figure it out and go online to delete the thread and then I get an answer! But anyhow, thank you for those links! I realized that in the program I didn't have playback enabled to go back through the us-122 (i had everything plugged in correctly), so all i could hear was the monitor as i was recording (had nothing to do with midi after all). Thank you again.

alright, i guess i have a new but similar problem. Now I can hear everything fine when I play it, but playing back i can hear no midi tracks. yes, yes, yes, i know that midi is not an audible signal...so please, someone who uses cubase or anyone that can help, what do i have to do to get the midi to sound on playback? i know how to convert a midi track to audio, but id like to be able to edit before i do that (isnt that what a sequencer is for after all?). btw, im using Reason for the synths and stuff. thank you!
 
Just looked up the Oxygen 8...it appears to have midi in & out as well as an audio output. You should have the keyboard connected to the midi in and out of the US-122, and then run the audio output (phones) to one of the audio inputs or directly to your speakers. This will allow you to monitor your midi data without converting it to audio.

If you're using Cubase, you have to manually set each track to play through your midi port. Click a track and on the info. panel on the left, select the US-122 as the midi output for that track...even if you set this in the device setup, it does not automatically route the signal to your interface.
 
that's the thing, there is no midi in or audio output on it (well on mine at least). there are two midi out ports labled "USB" and "keyboard". (the other ports are a 1/4" "sustatin switch", USB power connector, on/off switch and then the power adapter. I realize that its making sound because it runs through reason, then into cubase which tells it to come out through the us-122...but during playback i guess, does it have to run through reason again and back into cubase or through speakers or what? It's probably one of those things that somebody could sit down and look at it and see that something is unchecked or the wrong thing is selected really quick and it's fixed. It's frustrating because this is the last and only issue keeping me from doing anything meaningful with midi. thank you again
 
In order to hear the midi data, it must pass through a device that can generate sound (synths are the most common). It sounds like your keyboard can only send midi messages, not recieve them. The Oxygen 8 is only meant to control soft synths, which are triggered by midi, but produce sound that is audio.

Basically, you either need to load up on soft synths or look into a new keyboard.
 
yea well the problem is that i can hear the sound when it passes through the synth in reason, but i just need to know how to hear that on playback. i guess im just wondering how to get the midi data being played back in cubase to go back through reason and thus back into audible sound. I know for a fact that this is possible as my cousin has the same keyboard, uses reason for synth, i believe uses cubase as well and is able to hear the midi recording as audio on playback somehow. I asked her for help but i guess it was working for her with no problems so she couldnt help me with what i need to do.

You need to read up on how to bus midi tracks from cubase to reason via rewire. Check you reason manual
 
i used the ol' windows trick of reinstalling everything and hoping that fixes everything, and hey it worked! So now all i have to do is stop myself from wondering what was wrong and just be glad its working and ill be happy!
