Hello, this is my first real post, so bear with me. I recently got a Tascam DR-05 for Christmas. I can imagine there are plenty of questions involving what everyone got for Christmas, and while a DR-05 is nothing special, I was hoping I could get some questions answered. The DR-05 is a digital, handheld recorder that features 2 omni-directional condenser mics and is able to record up to mp3 320kbps. I've done a few short recordings with it, but nothing worthwhile. I plan on jamming with some friends this week and I was wondering, could I record with this sucker? I have a four-track USB interface and 2 crappy mics. Could I use the aux out on the DR-05 to go to the interface, along with the two mics? Also, what should I mic with what? I have very limited gear, here's the list:

TASCAM DR-05

SHURE vocal mic

Radioshack vocal mic

Alesis USB audio-interface

so, how should I record, a drummer, guitarist/singer, and bass player with? I understand there's not a lot to work with, but I'm very pressed money-wise.

Thanks, Tyler.

p.s."Whew, a lot to read.... like I said bear with me."

What's the purpose of the recording - a demo disc that you can give to people to get gigs? For practice?
Best bet with that lack of equipment is to try recording the band with the Tascam alone - set up like you were playing a gig, in a decent-sounding room, and find a sweet spot for the recorder.

Which Alesis interface do you have? What DAW are you using?

Trying to use a combination of vocal mics and the recorder will probably lead to a messy sound with all sorts of phase issues.

Sorry I wasn't specific. The interface is at a friend's house so I don't know exactly which one it is. But it's very basic. After some more work with the Tascam i think i agree with you. It's not only gong to be easier, but will probably sound better. I'm just planning to record for fun. Maybe for a publicity's sake. I'm using Sony Acid 7. So, yeah, thanks for your reply, i hope it turns out well, should be jamming on Thursday. I'll let you know how it turns out.

recording with the Tascam went great! I used it for everything but the drums, I used 2 dynamic mics for the drums. It turned out good for how little time we put into it. It really turned out to be "name and key and lets jam on it" kinda thing, which is not to say I don't love those kinda days, but not when your recording, so, nothing's really postable otherwise I'd let you guys hear it. Maybe next time though.
