Tascam DP01 portastudio

good job prometalguy

I too have some tunes recorded and on the pc as mp3 files is it hard to attach links like that. could you explain the proccess a little more.

tascam dp01fx update

Okay, I'm less than a week into using the Tascam, and let me say, it's pretty simple to use. Read the instructions, highlight the important stuff (not that much) and have your head about you. It's pretty logical, there are no imbedded menus, and few multifunction buttons. It turns out remarkably good recordings, bearing you have decent mics and sound setting. I haven't mixed anything, nor have I mastered anything -- I'm just trying to get second-nature with the machine and process.
There are a bunch of bass effects built-in but I haven't used any yet. That's it for now. Signing off.

Digital Optical Audio Output

Hey guy!!! just did a mix using the Digital Optical Output, what a difference. My Sound Card had Optical inputs, and the DP-01 had the outputl!!!! very cool

I bought the DP01 for myself for Christmas.

Logical thinking is like a second language to me - very foreign. Even so, I have been very successful with the DP01. It's that easy!

I've recorded everything with an inexpensive Radio Shack omnidirectional mic and the sound is great!

Bear in mind that the master is not as loud as a purchased CD as there is no professional compression as found on more expensive machines. I bought it to make demos and I absolutely cannot be happier (unless, of course, there's a machine that guarantees that demos will be picked up by mega stars and I will become a millionaire overnight. LOL)

I'm thinking of getting one of these. I have an opportunity to record a live band and will get a feed from the soundboard. Does this machine have to capability to recieve a line level feed? If so, how many line levels can it accomadate?

I'm considering getting rid of my fostex dmt-8vl for this. I know there are huge advantages with knowing your equipment, and after a while, i feel that i really know my way around the fostex. i'm not into computer recording yet, but about how many 3 1/2 minute songs is 40gb? Also, do you think i can figure this thing out pretty quickly? I'm a real fan of simplicity and no frills. I sort of liked the zoom units, but i didn't like how they cramed a drum machine in it; didn't wanna pay for that.

Dave - the DP-01 can record only two tracks at once, both of which can be set to line-level. Handy if you want to feed a L/R mix from your board.

psedosun - It's difficult to break down HD space into recording time. The maximum size a song can be is 7GB, and that's plenty big. Besides, since you can backup song files to your computer, drive size is pretty much a moot point. Alot of people like this machine because it's less menu-driven than other digital recorders. You might want to consider going to the tascam site and downloading the manual.

Yeah, I just bought one of these too, the basic/blue model. It's easily the best recorder I've ever used (not that I've used anything THAT great before but still). It's very solid and records very clear. I love it!

The problem is I'm looking into getting a good condenser mic and a mixer that has phantom power but I'm not sure how to hook them up to it for recording. It says in the manual I can use the "Stereo Mix (L,R)" inputs but that the signals will only go to the "Line Output" jacks and that "They cannot be recorded on the DP-01." What the hell is that? Is there another way? Or can I hook it up to one of the TRS inputs?

I'm a pretty big Tascam fan too. I currently have a US-428 for home recording and a US-224 for mobile recording but i'm thinking about getting the DP-01 to do most of my recording. My current multitrack is a Fostex VF-80 but i don't really use it because the S/pdif input and output is the only way to transfer things because i don't have the cd-rw drive. My main reason for wanting to get the dp-01 was the usb capability. I've been doing a little reading up on it and i was about to purchase one when a friend told me there have been a few reports of the hard drives dying. Has this happened to anybody here?

Dr. - See your other thread.

Dfyant - Hard drives fail; that's just a fact of life. I suspect some of the problems are due to people filling the drives w/o backing up. The drives become fragmented and its easier for corruption errors to creep in. Keeping the drive clean by backing up and removing old songs, and reformatting the drive every now and then, would probably keep many errors from occurring. If you've ever replaced a drive in a computer, you should have no trouble doing the same with the DP-01. Bear in mind that for every person who posts about drive problems, there are many more who don't have any difficulties, and thus never post.

Thanx Trillian. Yeah I do realize that hard drives aren't forever and when they have many fragments written to the disk, it can cause problems, but I just wanted to get a second opion about it. I mean, the way it was described to me was like after only "a handful of uses", but like you said, it's so many others that have been using them with no problems. That just swayed me to get one, not sure if I should get the regular, fx, or fx/cd though, but I am gonna get one.

Probably of the three, the FX is the best. You get XLR inputs and phantom power, not to mention the FX themselves (which are handy to have onboard, if only as a poor man's POD). The CD burner in the FX/CD is either a) useful to burn mixes to; or b) one more thing to go wrong, and redundant with the USB capability.

As Trillian, I agree the DP01FX is the best of the three.
Having said that, I must say I'm very satisfied with my DP01. I have a 10 mic setup, and have additional mixers that run through the 2 1/4 TRS inputs.
Luckily, my condenser is battery powered, so no need for phantom (it's a really useful feature though).
As for effects, I rather work with them when masterizing in my PC. I have Cool edit pro 2.0 and is just great.
So finally your decision will be based in 2 basic things: 1) budget 2) if you have external effects
For me, the DP01 was all that I needed.
Cheers!

I re recorded the distorted guitar and remixed the whole thing

This time I used

Marshall 4x12 cab
Ibanez TB-100 head
BOSS GE7
BOSS MZ-2
BOSS RV-5
Sure SM57
Mogami cable

The guitar was recorded at low volume, I know it would sound even better at a louder volume

You may want to go get another site ....
i went to listen and i started getting a bunch of pop ups and a porn ad? hopefully no virus.

I been listening to online tunes all night, some sites are much faster and straight to the tunes....some I just close out.

dp01/fx

I lost all songs in the exporting process!!! what in the world did I do?
Are they lost for good ? please help

Hey Cool, what do you mean?
You lost them when exporting them to the fat partition?
Are they still in the native partition?
Please elaborate a little more.
Cheers!

I bought one of these yesterday.

It's on its way.

I just one question: I know you need an a to b USB cord. I have one from an old scanner, but I wanted to know if it had to be a 2.0 USB chord?

Please let me know.
