Jiggz, you hit it on the head. It was designed for musicians, not engineers!

Dp01

I just recommended this unit to a friend...

He is a musician guitarists and wanted something to track with (newbie).
Being new to it all, i thought this is the most user friendly, unless going
cassette.

I think for simplicity, he could just outboard the effects and just have the
"stripped down" DPO1....tracking only.
PLAY/REC..

Leave all the guitar tones to the Amp & Mic...leave the DP01 flat.

Yeah, that's what i was kinda thinking.....less button pushing the better, get the sound right from the start!

You got one too Shakkalath, what did you have before?

I recently bought the dp-01/fx and find it very useful, but the only thing i work with is my acoustic and my voice so it works prefectly for me. easy to use, great for backing up on computer and messin with it there, great price but not a great unit for anything much more than small solo projects obviously.

Yeah.

Well, I really suck with this things so far. Also, IM woried about the sounds it isnt crystal clear, when I trun it up there is like a fuzz or something ??? WHAT !? I mean it sounds really good excpet for the static... how do I fix this ? maybe my unit is defective ?

Doesn't the DP01 with effects also have phantom power & XLR inputs? Even if you don't use the FX, it might be worth the extra change just for those additional features. I agree it's certainly marketed for the lone musician, so probably having 2 inputs at a time is enough.

Cheers,

Yes indeed.

Help learning

I just got my dp-01FX and I am trying to learn how to use it. I am reading through the manual and I have been able to do quite a bit already. It's very easy to use. But, is there an active BB somewhere where I can talk with other owners to learn the finer points of recording with this thing?
Any help would be appreciated

I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the idea of this recorder. While I'm going primarily with PC recording, it'd be nice to have something I could set up on the fly or take in a briefcase with me for location recording.

eng, songwriter or both?

i third that... for a songwriter type, 2 inputs is plenty IMO.
..digital bouncing/overdubbing is nice.
DP01 is only starting to grasp what some of us wanted all along.

i'm curious too, per Hornet and REEL comments....

Ex: They made the Yamaha MD8
it has a Standard Analog Mixing section going to the digital media=MiniDisc.
BEst of both worlds in a way.

So why didn't the Mfgs continue this approach??
Keep the mixer-section & just replace the MD with a harddrive or other digital media corporate..like CD-RW?

but nooooo..they had to go all out and eliminate the Mixing Section and replace with Menus? and 120000 shtty guitar sounds?? and then tempt us with Digital quality and 24tracks at 44k.

Fantasy...give me a Yamaha- "MD24" with a Fiber Optic output for
a Masterlink...some decent monitoring sets..and decent outboard tools and instruments...and I'd have a damn fun, high quality recording set-up.

I don't know how old this topic is but I'll add my two cents anyway. I just got this unit last week. I'm pretty new to home recording. I messed around with a borrowed Tascam 414mkII for a few months a year ago and that's about as far as my multi track experience goes. When I finally got the money to buy my own multi track recorder I first looked at Boss which was out of my price range so I went with Tascam.

This unit, to me, is just as easy to use as the 414mkII. Very little "shift" functions to deal with. I'm impressed with the sound. The two XLR inputs and phantom power are plenty for me because I'm recording only myself playing instruments, so the lack of XLR inouts on this thing is a non-issue for me. The unit is now shipping with system 1.10 which includes an internal metronome. To me the only downsides of this unit is the LCD screen and some of the effects. I wish the screen was backlit or could at least be tilted so I can read the levels easier. Some of the effects seem to add a lot of noise to the signal, but that could just be my inexperienced ears. But all in all, this unit is perfect for any musician who just wants to get their music laid down.

I went from a 414 MK II to the DP-01FX and I love it !!!! But by some peoples standard I'm a audio moron....I use it for just myself with a stereo drum machine ( there, I used up my 2 track max ) but big deal . It worked great. Next I add bass, guitars, vocals ( phantom power).....just do it myself 1 track at a time so not having a mixer dont matter to me. It could us a bigger display (backlit) but I got a swing arm light at my bench....The effects are of course cheezy as anything else would be but there are enough of them to find some good ones if ya turn em down a little....
I wouldnt want to try to record a huge band with it but for 1 guy in a basement studio Ya cant beat it I dont think.......I'll post something when I get something done. Just got it last night and I cant pull myself away.....workin on 5 songs.

I'm just getting started with my DP01. It absolutely kills the MR-8 I was using. Got it off ebay new for under $300. Looking at the manual I'm glad I didn't get the FX version-seems heavy on "special effects" presets. IMO the extra cash would be better spent on a decent preamp like the DMP3...

I LOVE !!!!!! Better Money than 500 blowjobs ........Fuck computer....cool edit.....whatever.....I LOVE IT.....go ahead and call me stupid.....you should check my past a see what a BITCH I can Be......I Love the Tascam DP-01FX.......go ahead and fuck with me on this one.......

fellas,

care to chim in on the other thread? i could really use some sound clips of this machine in action..

many tanx!

Posting one soon. I have a DP01 (not the one with crappy effects) and weve recorded drums with it last weekend. We are doing other instruments this week and we will post it as soon as it comes out. We dont use all the comp/EQ/FX/mastering plug-ins usually found in higher end home studios. We want to keep the recording as raw and natural as possible. So check it out soon.

i recently got a dp01fx (which came with an audio technica AT2020 mic and headphones). i've recorded drums, bass, elec & acous. guitar, mandolin and electric piano with varying degrees of success. i have not mixed anything yet, so i don't know what it will sound like on a stereo. i'm just getting started and i really don't know what i'm doing, but so far i'm having fun and seem to have gotten the hang of tracking with this machine. i'll probably do another few sessions of tracking before i try my hand at mixing/mastering, etc. this seems like the ideal piece of equipment for a musician that wants to work up some tunes on their own, one instrument at a time.
