Hi,

My question is this... I have a DM4800 with firewire card and I have it set at the moment to rec to logic using busses. So 1 thro 24 go to busses which go direct into logic and subsequently those channels in logic return to 25 onwards etc.

Is there going to be a difference if I dont use the busses and record using direct outs instead? I mean, if I do what would be the major benifit? I understand that they are not the same thing as the Dir out is pre fader, eq, pre everything etc but I dont have a habit of changing my input signal anyway.

What are your thoughts? or am I thinking about this worng?

Thanks all.

I route through the busses when I record to an Alesis HD24 via the DM 4800 ADAT cards, which I usually do when I'm recording drums and bass live. This way I can apply light EQ and Compression/Gate as I'm recoding. I never route through the busses when recoding direct to logic using the FW card. I find that the on board EQ and effects of the DM4800 can be counter productive as the audio tools available in Logic are so much better than anything in the DM 4800; I have found it better to record as direct as possible with as little "color" from the DM 4800 as possible whenever recording direct into a DAW. To me, there is a very obvious Tascam sonic footprint once you start using their onboard EQ and compression. I don't mind this so much on the drums and bass, but it can be annoying on vocals, keys, and guitars.

Yeah I agree. I would rather record directly which is what I do most of the time. I have each channel set to "direct" on the ouput assign so really its direct into logic. I just read that the direct button overrides my buss assignment anyway and sends the signal before anything is processed.

Thanks for your thoughts.
