tascam and bass drum help

Hi All!
I'm new to the drums and to recording, so please put up with a newbie. I've got an older Tascam 464 and I'm finding that the bass drum really rattles when recording. I've got a pillow in it, and am using only a Sampson CO1 condenser as an overhead mic. Is my problem bass related, mic related, or both? I don't suppose anyone here that's familiar with the tascam is near Chapel Hill, NC and would consider coming over to get me started? I apologize for being completely ignorant, but I haven't found a resource for those like me that are clueless!

does the bass drum rattle when you play, or is it only on the recordings that it rattles?

dont know anything about your mic, but even one decent condesor should give you an acceptable sound.

if the noise is only on the recording and not when you play i would suggest turning the level down when recording so you dont "redline" so much. experiment around and find the best level. and it never helps to take notes on good settings and also bad ones. saves alot of time in the long run.

Thanks! I played around with the level and various other things and I think all's good. The tascam manual pretty much assumes that you already know what you're doing. I need a short course in how a home recording studio actuallly works!
