Tascam 688 playback just stops

Howdy Tascamen and women,
We were rolling tape Sunday on the tascam 688 and a few times the machine just stopped. I even lost the one good take of the day because I hit record and it was rolling, then I looked down again and it had just stopped. Any ideas of what this problem is? motor? me? tape?

I don't know if the 688 is a belt drive capstan or not but if it is, the belt might need replacing or there might be a back tension adjustment issue or there might be a voltage regulation transistor that going thermally out of order and about to buy the farm but either way, it's something a service shop is going to have to look into to fix it.

The 688 is not the kind of beast you want to open up and start poking around in if you are not an experienced DIY'er so find a shop and get an estimate.
