Hi,

I'm hoping someone knows anything that may help me here. My partner and I recently moved to a new flat and unfortunately after moving we are having problems with our Tascam 688. Perhaps it got knocked too much during the move.

The unit registers input and the routing seems to be functional; you can monitor fine while recording. The problem is that when trying to play back the tape, no sound comes out and nothing shows up on the signal meters. I can't tell if anything is actually getting recorded onto the tape. Playing back tapes that we recorded and worked before the problem has the same issue though. The tape is spinning as it should be.

If anyone has any suggestions as to why this might be.. Alternatively, if anyone just has a service manual, that would be a great help for me to figure out what is wrong.

First thing that springs to mind is to ensure you're routing correctly to tape, and then correctly on playback - an awful lot gets hidden behind that little screen, it is easy enough to forget something.

The most logical test I can think of is to select preset Scene 1 (assuming your 688 still has its factory Scenes), hook up a sound source to any input, record onto track 1 monitoring through the Cue mixer, then select Scene 12 to monitor playback through the #1 channel fader and Group 1-2 output. Repeat with Scenes 2-8 to check the other 7 tracks are recording.

If that reveals something not working, you've definitely got some kind of fault.

Cheers, Ben.
