Has anyone ever had to replace the tape transport switches (play, record, FFwd, etc., etc) on one of these recorders or had issues with the hinges on the cassette lid?
My son has been offered a 688 that looks pretty clean apart from possible problems with these two parts and I really need to figure this all out before he decides to hand over any cash.
NO, The transport switches them selves may not be the problem, if the unit acts like it's getting a command to "play/stop/etc" it may be that the belt needs replacement, this is usually 90% of transport problems......
Also use a new good quality cassette tape to check out a used machine, I bring with me 2 new TDK's when ever I audition a used piece of gear. Sometimes a cheap/used cassette tape itself will be the problem......
Door hinge: may need to find a scrapped unit and replace the door itself on the one you are thinking of buying.......
If this doesn't help , P/M me with a more specific characaturistic detail of transport problem.....
My son spent time last night recording, etc., without any obvious problems, apart from his not being familiar with the machine. The transport control issue appears to be a case of a worn out button assembly........the switches underneath seem fine, and the button assy can be purchased for approx $12 Aust. There are functions on the recorder that we won't have time to check out before having to make a decision about buying it, but at this stage it seems to be OK.
Matt only wants to use it in his bedroom for "song development".............any full-on recording would be done on the bigger gear in the studio.
