Tascam 688 midistudio tape speed issue

Hi everyone, needing some advice with my Tascam 688. During recording & playback the tape speed keeps slowing down & speeding up. I took it to a guy and he says i need a new motor ? Has anyone ever had this problem and is it worth fixing ?

I did have that problem with mine a couple of years ago. I ordered a new belt from tascam, replaced it and now it runs at the same speed consistently. I did a step-by-step thread with pictures and stuff showing the belt replacement process a while back in this forum. If you search for it, you should find it...

Of course it could be the motor or perhaps even something else, but the belt is cheap and easy to replace so definitely worth a shot before you try other more expensive options, or, heaven forbid, give up.
